Job Description
Schedule

Under 27 hours/week within the clinic's schedule below:

  • Monday (8:30am-6:00pm)
  • Tuesday (8:30am-6:00pm)
  • Wednesday (8:30am-5:00pm)
  • Thursday (8:30am-4:00pm)
  • Friday (8:30am-4:00pm)

There is some flexibility with the position in the sense that the workload dictates the hours. SLDDS strives to provide as much flexibility with scheduling as possible, but ultimately, the schedule of all staff is dictated by the needs of the organization and the availability of volunteer providers. All employees’ schedules are adjusted accordingly as positions and providers change.

Job Summary

Responsible for facilitating patient treatment and maintaining the clinical area, as well as assisting dentists with procedures. Works with the Patient Care Coordinators to ensure patient flow is efficient and treatment is followed through. When volunteer dental assistants are scheduled, SLDDS’s dental assistants act as a “runner”: sterilize instruments and keep the operatories stocked.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Assist dentist with procedures
  • Notify volunteer dentist of any medical alerts
  • Have patient sign appropriate release forms
  • Chart patient treatment before patient leaves the chair, including dentist’s name, assistant’s initial, and recommended treatment for the next visit
  • Escort patient to the front desk upon completion of treatment
  • Sterilize instruments
  • Maintain and clean equipment in clinical area
  • Aids in keeping the dentist on schedule
  • Stock all work stations
  • Set up for the next day
  • Empty all bio-hazard trash
  • Work with the clinical team to make extraction packets
  • Keep labs organized, neat, and clean
  • Communicate with scheduled Patient Care Coordinators regarding appointments & emergencies
  • Work with Donated Program’s Patient Care Coordinator to ensure volunteer dental professionals leave at scheduled times
  • Provide feedback on improving patient flow efficiency
  • Work with management to market the clinic and recruit volunteer dentists
  • Clinic maintenance
  • May be cross-trained for front desk duties
Skills and Educational Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. Effective communication, knowledge of dental terminology and procedures, familiarity with Dentrix, basic computer skills, excellent organizational skills, and Spanish speaking ability are required.

Working Conditions

Some weekend work may be required for events, conventions, and seminars, with schedule adjustments. Up-to-date Hepatitis vaccinations and TB testing are required. Employees must wear scrubs, eye protection, lab coats, and other PPE as per OSHA standards.
