Job description

Job Summary:

Provide direct support to dentists, hygienists, denturists, and other provider personnel in delivering dental care and services within a Kaiser Permanente dental office.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Perform duties permitted a dental assistant, consistent with training and under the supervision of a licensed provider, as per State Dental Practice Act and Administrative Rules. These duties include applying topical anesthetic, removing sutures, retracting tissues, assisting with rubber dam placement, debris removal, inspecting the oral cavity, drying root canals, placing temporary fillings, taking impressions, polishing teeth, training patients in oral hygiene, and taking dental radiographs.
  2. Support orthodontic procedures, including selecting and sizing bands, removing appliances, checking loose brackets, placing/removing wires and elastics, taking intra-oral measurements, removing bonding material, and organizing patient records. Also, greet patients, explain treatments, review health questionnaires, promote comfort, and answer patient questions.
  3. Anticipate provider needs, communicate effectively to maintain patient flow, prepare and organize instruments and supplies, establish a clean operating environment, record and verify patient information accurately, and handle patient care-related data via automated systems. Respond to medical emergencies and perform radiographs, blood pressure measurements, and instrument sterilization per guidelines.
  4. Perform additional duties as assigned by management, consistent with training, including placing matrix retainers, polishing restorations, removing excess cement, taking various impressions, assisting with nitrous oxide administration, and other authorized functions under the supervision of a dentist.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum one year as a dental assistant or graduate from an ADA-accredited program.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Dental Radiation Proficiency Certificate (Oregon), Pit and Fissure Sealant Certificate (within 6 months), Expanded Function Dental Assistant Certificate (within 3 months), Basic Life Support (within 3 months).
Additional Requirements:
  • Proven competence in four-handed dentistry, familiarity with dental materials, instruments, and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work under supervision, be well-organized, and demonstrate professionalism and courtesy.
  • Excellent attendance and pass a clinical pre-employment skills test.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of sterilization and infection control equipment.
Notes:
  • Work days and hours vary, including travel to multiple locations in Oregon.

Primary Location: Oregon, Portland, Glisan Dental Offices

Hours Per Week: 1

Shift: Day, with variable workdays and hours from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, including on-call duties.
