Job description

Correctional Managed Care Dental Assistant

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

Job Summary:

Performs direct and indirect patient care procedures, as well as general clinical and support tasks, as specifically delegated or directed by the supervising dentist.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Takes and records patient health history and vital signs; performs radiography, dental laboratory procedures, inmate dental health orientation, and education.
  • Provides assistance in preventive, periodontic, restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, and oral surgery procedures; records clinical observations, treatment information, and data.
  • Maintains clinic orderliness and cleanliness; performs sterilization and disinfection of instruments and equipment; maintains inventory of instruments, needles, and hazardous materials, including logs for tracking and control.
  • Operates computers to enter data, generate reports, draft correspondence, and develop administrative analyses.
  • Performs administrative support duties involving independent judgment under supervision, including filing, routing calls, mailing, scanning, emailing, and faxing.
  • Uses data entry systems for scheduling routine and sick call appointments; prepares impressions and packages for dental laboratory; maintains prosthetic case logs.
  • Manages inventory levels and stock for the dental department; fills requisitions, work orders, and supply requests; returns expired or unused inventory; checks received contents against invoices and reports discrepancies.
  • Maintains an inventory of all dental equipment.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structures.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Marginal or Periodic Job Functions:
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Provides coverage to other units as needed.
Equipment:

Standard office and dental clinic equipment.

Work Environment:

Located within a prison, jail, or juvenile detention center. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are required. May be required to provide dental assistance at multiple facilities.

Required Education/Experience:
  • Current dental assistant registration maintained with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Current CPR certification.

Salary is commensurate with relevant experience.
