Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs seeks a Dental Assistant to support the dentist in direct patient care and perform other clinical and clerical functions under supervision.

Responsibilities include setting up the operatory, preparing for treatment, sterilization, basic chairside assistance, radiographs under supervision, and documenting in electronic records. Proficiency in English and HIPAA compliance are essential; a CODA-accredited program is preferred.

Qualifications

• Completion of a dental assistant program CODA-accredited or equivalent.
• Certification in radiologic procedures as required by regulation.
• Proficiency in infection control and sterile technique.

Responsibilities

• Set up operatory and/or surgery suite for planned dental procedures.
• Receive and prepare patients for treatment.
• Perform disinfection and sterilization procedures.
• Prepare procedural trays and armamentaria set ups.
• Provide basic chairside assistance with direct instruction from the dentist.
• Maintain an uninterrupted operative field during procedures.
• Educate patients on oral hygiene and preventive care.
• Expose and process basic dental radiographs under supervision; save images to EMR.
• Maintain patient confidentiality per HIPAA; direct patients to staff for scheduling.
