Job Description

Position Summary

Dental assistants enhance the efficiency of the dentist in delivering quality oral health care and are essential members of the dental care team. They assist in providing direct patient care across all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery. Responsibilities include assisting the dentist, setting up and maintaining equipment, and preparing patients for treatment from start to finish of their appointment.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  1. Prepare patients for dental procedures by helping them feel comfortable before, during, and after treatment.
  2. Maintain proper and efficient patient flow management.
  3. Set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist the dentist during procedures.
  4. Take and expose dental diagnostic x-rays and ensure sensor care and guidelines are followed.
  5. Record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.
  6. Chart treatment details in Patient Management Software.
  7. Assist the dentist in managing medical or dental procedures.
  8. Provide preoperative explanations and postoperative instructions as prescribed by the dentist.
  9. Record treatment information in patient records; fabricate temporary restorations or impressions.
  10. Make preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations.
  11. Pour, trim, and polish study casts; prepare whitening trays.
  12. Clean and polish removable appliances.
  13. Apply fluoride protective coatings to teeth.
  14. Educate patients on oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health.
  15. Manage patient dismissals and hand-offs to other departments.
  16. Sterilize or disinfect instruments and operatories.
  17. May serve as the Clinical Inventory Administrator, conducting supply inventory, ordering, and tracking budgets.
  18. May act as the Compliance and Safety Officer, conducting spore testing, maintaining safety documentation, and training interns on safety policies.
  19. Comply with all company, OSHA, and HIPAA policies and regulations.
  20. Position may require relocation to other clinics as needed.
  21. Perform administrative and maintenance tasks as assigned.
  22. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Skills & Abilities

Education: Completion of Dental Assisting Program or minimum one-year experience as a Dental Assistant.

Experience: Same as education requirement.

Certifications & Licenses: Current Dental Assisting Permit, CPR Certification, and X-Ray Certification.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Eaglesoft, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.

Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, annual Motor Vehicle Record check, understanding of HIPAA, sterilization, and infection control procedures, knowledge of CDT codes, and compliance with vaccination policies.
