Job Description
Position Summary: Dental assistants enhance the efficiency of dentists in delivering quality oral healthcare and are vital members of the dental team. They assist in providing direct patient care across various dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery. Responsibilities include assisting dentists, setting up and maintaining equipment, and preparing patients for treatment from start to finish of each appointment.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare patients for dental procedures, ensuring comfort before, during, and after treatment.
- Manage patient flow efficiently.
- Set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist dentists during procedures.
- Take and expose dental diagnostic x-rays, maintaining proper care and guidelines for x-ray sensors.
- Record medical and dental histories and vital signs.
- Document treatment details in Patient Management Software.
- Assist dentists during medical or dental procedures.
- Provide preoperative explanations and postoperative instructions.
- Record treatment information, fabricate temporary restorations, and prepare study casts and whitening trays.
- Clean and polish dental appliances and apply fluoride treatments.
- Educate patients on oral hygiene strategies.
- Ensure proper patient dismissal and handoffs.
- Sterilize or disinfect instruments and operatories.
- Optional roles include Clinical Inventory Administrator and Compliance and Safety Officer, involving inventory management, safety inspections, and staff training.
- Adhere to all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations, including OSHA and HIPAA.
- Flexibility to relocate or perform administrative and maintenance tasks as needed.
- Maintain consistent attendance.
Skills & Abilities:
- Completion of a Dental Assisting Program or at least one year of experience.
- Current Dental Assisting Permit, CPR Certification, and X-Ray Certification.
- Proficiency in Eaglesoft, Microsoft Office, and understanding of sterilization and infection control protocols.
- Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and compliance with vehicle operation policies if applicable.
- Knowledge of dental procedures, CDT codes, and vaccination requirements.
