Job description

Job Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Dentistry,

  • Employee will be dually supervised by the dentist at their assigned institution.
  • Employee will assist with providing dental care to patients in their assigned clinic and statewide, as needed.
  • Prepares patients for treatment and provides chairside assistance for all dental procedures.
  • Operates dental equipment as necessary for the care and treatment of patients.
  • Exposes, develops, and mounts/files dental x-rays.
  • Also prepares and maintains dental x-ray developing solutions.
  • Maintains dental equipment by cleaning and lubricating dental hand pieces, suction lines, etc.
  • Also cleans working areas and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
  • Prepares and mixes various fillings and impression materials.
  • Performs clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Performs prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction as needed.
  • Schedules dental appointments.
  • Maintains dental patient records.
  • Maintains the inventory of the clinic's dental supplies.
  • Request additional supplies as needed.
  • Keeps statistical reports on clinical activities and performs administrative/clerical duties as necessary.
  • Assists with providing dental care to other dental clinics, statewide, as instructed/needed.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

An associate degree in Dental Assistance or one year of formal training in a dental assistance course accredited by the American Dental Association.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

(Or an acceptable equivalence as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).

A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.

One (1) year of formal training in an ADA accredited assistant's course and one (1) year of dental assistant experience.

OR

A high school graduate and one (1) year of dental assistant experience with certification in dental x-ray.
