POSITION: Dental Assistant
SCHEDULE: Part-Time 24 Hours Week
FACILITY: Douglas County Correctional Center
LOCATION: 710 S. 17th St, Omaha, NE

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct clinical supervision of the Dentist, a Dental Assistant performs non-professional work assisting the Dentist during examination and treatment of patients and in the routine handling of instruments and supplies.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintains supplies, materials and records of treatment.
2. Sets up instruments, equipment and supplies as directed by the Dentist.
3. Prepares the patient for treatment.
4. Helps patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
5. Ensures proper clean up, packaging and sterilizing of instruments.
6. Assist in instruction of patients in proper dental hygiene
7. Assists in screenings for dental emergencies and sick call.
8. Provides chair-side assistance by keeping operating field clear, passing instruments and suctioning.
9. Scrubs and sterilizes instruments.
10. Mixes restorative materials.
11. Assists in taking intra-oral x-rays in accordance with proper radiological hygiene.
12. Develops and mounts x-ray films.
13. Performs intra-oral tasks as defined by law.
14. Maintains x-ray unit, processor, autoclave and dental unit according to specifications.
15. Inventories supplies and equipment to maintain adequate levels.
16. Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
17. Ensures there is sufficient number of trays set up for the day's patients, pulpotomy, caries control, amalgam and Perio/scaling.
18. Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of dental clinic including cleaning developer, autoclave, and x-ray unit film processor.
19. Administrative responsibilities including maintaining dental charts; recording dental findings, maintaining all dental logs and inputting information into appropriate computer record.
20. Responsible for dental office security to include instrument, drug and needle counts. Maintains constant alertness to conditions that might endanger the security of the institution, personnel and inmates.
21. Maintains confidentiality of inmate records.
22. Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the Dentist and HSA.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

LICENSING: None required
CERTIFICATION: Expanded Functions OR Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Certification; Dental
Radiology Certification (if not included in above certification); Current CPR
Certification
EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
EXPERIENCE: Experience working in a dental setting and/or correctional health care preferred.
