Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the direct clinical supervision of the Dentist, the Dental Assistant reports directly to the Dentist for clinical matters and the Dental Manager in areas that pertain to administration oversight. This collaborates oversight of the Dental Assistant ensures quality patient care.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Opens and closes dental clinic as per the facility policies.

2. Receives patients and facilitates the prompt seating of patients for dental care.

3. Prepares operatories with hand pieces attached and appropriate tray set-up

4. Prepares the patient for dental examinations and procedures.

5. Assists the Dentist in direct patient care situations. Hands the Dentist the appropriate instruments (Four-Handed Dentistry)

6. Performs dental x-rays and prepares the patient using appropriate shielding as requested by the Dentist.

7. Maintains adequate level of supplies and instruments in the operatories.

8. Cleans and/or lubricates instruments used in patient care prior to sterilization

9. Transports and sends out contaminated instruments and receives sterilized instruments used in patient care appropriately

10. Gives dental care instructions to patient adequately and appropriately

11. Translates for providers when needed

12. Mixes dental materials as requested by the Dentist

13. Pours, trims, and package models from impressions for dental prosthetics

14. Uses Dentrix and Epic as per established guidelines.

15. Disinfects surface work areas, dental chairs, and work areas used during dental care

16. Reports to appropriate personnel, shortages in supplies, materials and necessary equipment repairs in a timely manner.

17. Upholds the Mission of the Corporation in demonstrating the commitment to provide safe, high-quality healthcare to patients.

18. Uses effective, courteous communication when working with persons, supervisors and the public

19. Knowledgeable of the Corporation and Morrisania's policies and procedures.

20. Observes all infection control policies. Uses proper hand washing techniques

21. Work together to provide comprehensive, personalized care for all New Yorkers and commit to providing a person-centered care environment while exemplifying ICARE values

Minimum Qualifications

1. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 600 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; or
2. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 300 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; and 6 (six) months of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking and uploading dental digital imaging, assisting dentist at chairside, and preparing dental instruments for sterilization; or
3. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in “2” above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. Each 100 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside is equivalent to two (2) months of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist’s office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.
