Summary
The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a dental assistant for the dental clinic in Batavia, NY.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Experience and Education: Six months experience demonstrating ability to perform the work or familiarity with it, or successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
- Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations are qualifying.
- Certification: Must meet credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75 if administering radiologic procedures, including completion of an educational program meeting or exceeding those standards and certification as radiographers.
- Loss of Credential: Failure to obtain or maintain required licensure/certification may result in removal from the occupation or termination of employment.
- Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: Includes successful completion of specific courses and examinations or approved programs.
- Certification by DANB is highly desirable but not required.
- Preferred Experience: One year of dental assisting experience.

- Grade Determinations: The full performance level is GS-06, requiring demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities including identification of normal oral anatomy, knowledge of dental instruments and procedures, and ability to perform various clinical tasks.
- Creditable Experience: Experience must involve use of KSAs associated with current professional dental assisting practice, including graduation from a certified program or relevant work experience.
- Physical Requirements: Tasks require long periods of bending, standing, walking, reaching, and handling heavy instruments or materials, with work performed in a healthcare setting requiring PPE.
Duties
- Show courtesy and respect to patients, co-workers, and the public.
- Assist with setting up procedures, passing instruments, maintaining the operative field, and preparing materials.
- Assist in routine and specialized dental procedures, maintain equipment, and capture dental images.
- Follow infection control protocols, assist with patient care, and manage clerical tasks such as scheduling and documentation.
- Monitor patient condition, provide education, and perform laboratory functions as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as time permits.
Work Schedule
Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
