Job summary

Gundersen Health System seeks a Denials Coding Specialist to join a remote, part-time Revenue Cycle team. You will review denials, apply CPT/HCPCS/ICD-10-CM guidelines, and partner with prior authorization and billing teams to reduce denials.

Candidates should have 3-4 years of healthcare coding experience, CPC/COC/CCS/RHIT/RHIA certifications, and strong analytical and communication skills. On-site training begins in La Crosse, WI. Remote work available for WI/MN/IA residents.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Health Information Technician program, Health Information Administrator program, equivalent allied health education, or other post-high school training in a related field
• 3-4 years of healthcare coding experience in a multi-specialty clinic or hospital setting
• Experience with coding denials, payer rejections, Medicare NCCI edits, and Medicare NCDs/LCDs
• Strong knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, coding regulations, and payer policies
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, and resolve coding-related professional and hospital billing denials using CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifier guidelines
• Identify denial trends, root causes, and opportunities for coder, clinician, and departmental education to prevent future denials
• Collaborate with prior authorization, revenue integrity, billing, and insurance follow-up teams to support denial mitigation strategies
• Serve as a coding resource by interpreting coding regulations, payer policies, and industry updates while supporting Revenue Cycle leadership and coding staff
• Maintain expertise in coding guidelines, regulatory changes, and best practices through continuing education and professional certification requirements

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical professional to join our team as a Denials Coding Specialist! If you are passionate about healthcare coding, denial prevention, and collaborating with teams to improve revenue cycle outcomes, we would love to hear from you!

What's Available:

• Hours: 20 hours/week (.5 FTE)
• Schedule: Part-time, Monday-Friday, daytime hours
• Department: Revenue Cycle
• Location: Remote (Must reside in WI, MN, or IA), first day of training will be on-site in La Crosse, WI

What You’ll Do:

What You’ll Need:
