Job summary

The City of New York’s Department of City Planning, Population Division, seeks a skilled City Research Scientist to analyze census and demographic data for NYC. You will develop population estimates and write reports for decision-makers.

Responsibilities include presenting findings to planners and agencies, advancing methods for small-area estimates, and supporting projections for NYC neighborhoods. Remote work up to 2 days weekly is available.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree with focus on demographic analysis and quantitative research methods.
• PhD in physical, biological, environmental, or social science with supervisory/research experience.
• Experience with population estimation and projection methods.
• Two years as City Research Scientist I can substitute for required experience.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research into difficult-to-enumerate housing units for 2030 Census preparations.
• Analyze population data for needs assessments, policy development, and program planning/implementation.
• Write reports on demographic topics for decision-makers and the broader public.
• Advance methods to produce small area population estimates and publish research.
• Present on demographic topics to audiences including city planners and agencies.
• Support production of population projections for NYC and neighborhoods.
• Assist in QA of data files and document methodologies.
