Job summary

The Robert R. McCormick Foundation’s Democracy Program invites an internship in Chicago to support local journalism and civic engagement. You will research grant opportunities, evaluate proposals, and help analyze Chicago’s media landscape under supervision of the Program Officer.

The role runs June through August 2019, full-time (about 40 hours/week), with compensation of $14 per hour. This is an excellent chance to gain hands-on experience in media philanthropy and program development.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program.
• Interest in media, communications, and journalism preferred.
• Passion for the Foundation’s values with commitment to deliver results.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and experience building relationships with multiple stakeholders.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills, particularly in communication with diverse constituencies in a variety of settings.
• Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite.
• All offers are contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screening.

Responsibilities

• Grantmaking: Program staff are evaluating investment opportunities to understand potential impact and strategic fit; interns will assist in reviewing Letters of Inquiry and proposals.
• Research: assess challenges and opportunities in Chicago reporting, focusing on diversity in the newsroom and journalist development.
• Network-building: assist in designing and organizing programs and events to share lessons with the journalism community.
