Job Summary
The Driver is responsible for safely transporting exterior building products to various customer jobsites. The role requires excellent driving skills, adherence to traffic laws, excellent communication, and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate company vehicles to transport and pick up building materials products at designated locations.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure safety and report any issues.
- Maintain a clean and well‑organized vehicle interior.
- Use proof of delivery to take pictures of the job site prior to making a delivery.
- Communicate effectively with customers, dispatchers, management, and other employees.
- Generate advance communications (text or phone call) to customers regarding product delivery.
- Follow delivery routes and schedules accurately and promptly.
- Load product onto the truck for specific deliveries designated within a route.
- Complete necessary paperwork and maintain accurate trip records.
- Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations calmly and efficiently, including contacting the department manager if needed.
- Unload product at the jobsite, usually unassisted, ensuring protection from inclement weather.
- Read work orders/invoices to determine product needs for customer pick‑up or delivery.
- Frequently lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Operate forklift to load customers’ vehicles, load an Erie Materials delivery truck, unload a vendor truck, move product in stock, etc.
- Work in the warehouse as needed to put away returns, stock bays, clean warehouse areas, and help walk‑in customers by providing them with their recently purchased product.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Customer Service & Technology Interaction
- Provide personalized customer service through direct in‑person and phone conversations.
- Use mobile apps and other technology to communicate with dispatchers and customers, including updates on arrival times and route changes.
- Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor in all interactions.
- Handle customer feedback and complaints efficiently, ensuring customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
- Valid New York State Commercial Class A or B driver license with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 1 year of professional driving experience is preferred.
- Boom Certification is preferred.
- High school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of building materials product is preferred.
- Forklift and/or Moffett experience are preferred.
- Excellent knowledge of and adherence to traffic laws and road safety regulations.
- Ability to interpret and operate GPS and other navigation tools.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screening.
- Ability to meet FMCSA Vision requirements (20/40 vision in each eye, 70‑degree field of vision, etc.).
- Ability to meet FMCSA Hearing requirements (per specification).
- Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Strong basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division in all units of measure).
- Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement or must obtain within first 3 months of employment if not already possessed.
- Air Brakes endorsement.
