Job summary

Forty Acres Fresh Market in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood seeks an experienced Deli/Prepared Foods Manager to lead the Mabel’s Meals department. You will oversee daily operations, drive profitability, ensure top food quality and safety, and deliver top-notch customer service.

This on-site, full-time role requires HS Diploma or equivalent, 4+ years in food service (2+ in management), cost analysis skills, and staff development.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 4 years relevant experience in food service; 2 years in a management role.
• Proficiency in food planning and preparation, sanitation, and food handling.
• Proficiency in completing cost analysis and reviewing invoices.
• City of Chicago Food Service Sanitation Certificate, or ability to acquire within 30 days of employment.
• Ability to manage a tight inventory of supplies, ingredients, prepared items, and department products.
• Proficient skill level in Microsoft Office or Google Productivity Suite, including email and Excel/Sheets.
• Experienced in various POS and transaction devices such as kiosks, printers, tickets, and touch screens.
• Knowledge of basic math, particularly fractions and margin formulas.
• Effective communication skills (written and verbal).

Responsibilities

• Directs and manages all functions and activities of the Deli & Prepared Foods Department.
• Achieve budgeted financial goals and ensure profitability through tracking labor costs, inventory and sales, and reducing losses.
• Oversees department personnel, including interviewing, hiring, training, and developing team members; scheduling and directing work.
• Create an environment that makes customers feel welcome, important, and appreciated.
• Assist with store promotional, advertising, and sales event planning.
• Collaborate with store and department managers to repurpose store inventory and develop recipes or specials.
• Supervise daily production of the deli menu to maintain high food quality and efficiency.
• Enforce quality control and food safety standards and ensure proper dating and rotation of products.
• Review competitive pricing and communicate changes to pricing coordinator.
• Ensure proper use of kitchen equipment (mixer, slicers, ovens, knives, fryers).
• Monitor expenses and waste; manage budgeting, P&L reviews.
• Order deli products and manage receiving, storage and invoicing.
• Adhere to food safety regulations and health department requirements.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety across the department and store.
• Communicate safety risks and incidents to management.
• Must be able to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
• Other duties as assigned.
