DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT
To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Review the department communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date items.
- Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas and equipment safely.
- Transport cases to sales floor, coolers, or preparation areas, open cases, and stock products in designated areas, checking for freshness and proper rotation.
- Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately. Remove broken containers and packing materials promptly.
- Operate equipment such as balers, case cutters, pallet jacks, and slicers safely (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
- Evaluate product quality, move damaged or unsalable items, and markdown products as necessary.
- Monitor case and cooler temperatures four times daily and record readings.
- Record out-of-stock conditions and report to management.
- Stock and refill display cases and counters throughout the store.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned to ensure product availability and customer service during peak periods.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills and ability to count.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English, including instructions and labels.
- Judgment skills for product placement, display, and ordering.
- Ability to open cases and stock without damage.
- Ability to clearly price and label products.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in similar roles.
- Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, and cleaning tools (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
TASKS OF THE JOB
This position generally requires:
- Mobility to perform tasks such as receiving, moving, opening, inspecting, and stocking merchandise within 100 yards.
- Working on tile or concrete surfaces for up to 8 hours.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
- Moving items up to 15 yards, handling signage, and performing cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Handling cash and vouchers, and using store equipment safely.
- Climbing ladders and racks up to 3 feet high.
- Stocking shelves, rotating products, and ensuring proper display and labeling.
- Being aware of safety hazards and responding appropriately.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from back doors, compressors, coolers, and prep areas.
