DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
2. Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
3. Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
4. Review the department communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
5. Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date items.
6. Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas and equipment safely.
7. Transport cases to sales floor, coolers, or preparation areas, open cases, and stock products in designated areas, checking for freshness and proper rotation.
8. Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately. Remove broken containers and packing materials promptly.
9. Operate equipment such as balers, case cutters, pallet jacks, and slicers safely (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
10. Evaluate product quality, move damaged or unsalable items, and markdown products as necessary.
11. Monitor case and cooler temperatures four times daily and record readings.
12. Record out-of-stock conditions and report to management.
13. Stock and refill display cases and counters throughout the store.
14. Perform additional tasks as assigned to ensure product availability and customer service during peak periods.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Basic math skills and ability to count.
2. Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
3. Stable work and educational history.
4. Ability to read and write English, including instructions and labels.
5. Judgment skills for product placement, display, and ordering.
6. Ability to open cases and stock without damage.
7. Ability to clearly price and label products.
8. Good interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior experience in similar roles.
3. Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, and cleaning tools (must be 18+ for certain equipment).

TASKS OF THE JOB

This position generally requires:

1. Mobility to perform tasks such as receiving, moving, opening, inspecting, and stocking merchandise within 100 yards.
2. Working on tile or concrete surfaces for up to 8 hours.
3. Lifting up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
4. Moving items up to 15 yards, handling signage, and performing cleaning and maintenance tasks.
5. Handling cash and vouchers, and using store equipment safely.
6. Climbing ladders and racks up to 3 feet high.
7. Stocking shelves, rotating products, and ensuring proper display and labeling.
8. Being aware of safety hazards and responding appropriately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Inside work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from back doors, compressors, coolers, and prep areas.
