DELI CLERK

PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
2. Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
3. Process customer purchases accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
4. Review the communication board daily for updates and follow guidelines for sampling and announcements.
5. Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/area for receiving merchandise, unload trucks, verify deliveries, inspect for shortages/damage, and code-date items.
6. Adhere to all health codes and regulations; clean the department regularly and safely.
7. Transport cases to sales floor or storage, open cases, and stock/display products properly, checking for freshness and facing products forward.
8. Ensure safety by practicing store safety rules and reporting hazards immediately. Remove broken containers and debris.
9. Operate equipment such as balers, case cutters, pallet jacks, and more, following safety requirements (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
10. Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and mark down prices as needed.
11. Check case and cooler temperatures four times daily and record conditions.
12. Report out-of-stock conditions promptly.
13. Stock and replenish display cases and counters throughout the store.
14. Perform additional tasks as assigned, including covering for absent workers and assisting during peak periods.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Basic math skills and ability to count.
2. Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
3. Stable work and educational history.
4. Ability to read and write English; understand instructions, labels, and reports.
5. Judgment in merchandise placement, display, and quality assessment.
6. Ability to open cases and stock without damaging products.
7. Ability to clearly price and label products.
8. Good interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior experience in similar roles.
3. Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, and fryers (must be 18+).

TASKS OF THE JOB:

1. Mobility: move, open cases, inspect, build displays, and stock within 100 yards.
2. Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
3. Lift up to 50 lbs. from 6 to 84 inches high.
4. Move items up to 15 yards, handle signage, and operate cash registers and equipment.
5. Perform cleaning, maintenance, and safety checks.
6. Climb ladders and shelves up to 3 feet high.
7. Stock, rotate, and face products on shelves from 8 inches to 36 inches high.
8. Respond to customer and co-worker questions and system alerts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Inside environment with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from equipment and storage areas.
