DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Greet all customers, respond to questions and requests, and explain store policies courteously.
  2. Wrap, package, and sell products like sandwiches, pizza, salads, fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
  3. Process customer purchases accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
  4. Review the communication board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
  5. Prepare and organize the cooler, freezer, and preparation areas for receiving merchandise, verify deliveries, inspect for damages, and code-date items.
  6. Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas regularly and safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  7. Transport cases to appropriate areas, open cases, and stock products, checking for freshness and proper placement.
  8. Ensure safety by following store safety rules, reporting hazards, and removing broken containers and debris.
  9. Operate equipment like balers, slicers, scales, fryers, and more, following safety requirements (must be 18+ for certain equipment).
  10. Evaluate product quality, handle damaged or unsalable items, and mark down prices as needed.
  11. Monitor case and cooler temperatures four times daily, record checks, and report out-of-stock conditions.
  12. Stock and rotate display cases and shelves throughout the store.
  13. Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned to support store operations during peak periods.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
  1. Basic math skills and ability to count.
  2. Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
  3. Stable work and educational history.
  4. Ability to read and write English, understand instructions, labels, and reports.
  5. Judgment skills for merchandise placement, display, and customer interaction.
  6. Ability to open cases and stock without damage.
  7. Ability to clearly price and label products.
  8. Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior related experience.
  3. Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, fryers, etc. (must be 18+ for some equipment).
TASKS OF THE JOB

This position generally requires mobility, physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., reach, grasp, and handle various materials and equipment, climb ladders, and respond to customer and co-worker questions. The work environment involves inside work with temperature variations and dust/humidity. Employees are also eligible for two retirement plans—an ESOP and a 401K—offering a pathway to ownership and financial security.
