General Function

As a Delicatessen Clerk, this position will be responsible for handling food in a safe manner and ensuring the work area is always clean and neat. You will run the department registers and receive payments, make change, etc., where applicable. Additionally, you will ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Reports to: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home; Food Service Director; Delicatessen Department Manager

Positions reporting to this role: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all interactions.
• Greet customers with a smile and attempt to learn and use their names.
• Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading heavy items, and passing along suggestions or requests.
• Answer phone calls promptly and courteously, taking orders when needed.
• Take customer orders at the deli counter.
• Work as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a positive work environment.
• Review orders, ensure food freshness, and prepare/replenish products as needed.
• Manage inventory, including checking in and storing products, and reviewing invoices.
• Operate department registers and handle payments.
• Maintain cleanliness and adhere to sanitation standards.
• Report to work on time and follow company policies and dress code.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

• Wash dishes, order supplies, deliver orders, and price products as needed.
• Assist in other store areas and perform special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

• Ability to understand and follow verbal and demonstrated instructions.
• Basic arithmetic skills involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Education and Experience

Less than high school or equivalent experience with up to six months of related work experience.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
• Visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision.
• Physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions

Exposure to dust, noise, hazards, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals in a fast-paced environment.

Telephone, fax, copier, intercom, computer, calculator, kitchen utensils, wrapping machine, disposal, trash compactor, cutter, slicer, scales, delivery van, pallet jack, knives.
