Job summary

Safeway is hiring a Deli Clerk to prepare fresh foods and deliver a welcoming customer experience in our deli. You’ll help customers choose from meats, cheeses, hot foods and grab‑and‑go items while maintaining friendly service and fast, accurate transactions.

You’ll stock displays, keep the department clean and organized, follow food safety guidelines, operate slicers and prep equipment safely, and work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications

• Clear customer communication when taking orders in person or by phone.
• Experience preparing deli products, including slicing and portioning.
• Understanding of deli meats, cheeses, prepared foods, and hot case items.
• Accuracy in labeling, pricing, and order completion.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining workflow and service speed.
• Knowledge of display stocking and visual merchandizing best practices.
• Ability to operate cash register and handle transactions accurately.
• Compliance with food safety, sanitation, and company procedures.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing demand.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 35 lbs.

As a Deli Clerk, your day is centered around preparing fresh food and creating a welcoming experience for customers. You’re often the first stop for something ready to enjoy, helping customers choose from deli meats, cheeses, hot foods, and prepared items while keeping service friendly and efficient. From slicing meats to preparing grab‑and‑go options, your work helps keep customers coming back.

Another slice of the role is keeping the department stocked, clean, and ready throughout the day. You’ll prepare hot and cold items, maintain organized displays, and monitor product freshness and temperature. Between restocking, taking orders, and working with equipment, the day stays active, making it a strong fit for someone who enjoys staying busy in a fast‑paced environment.

What You Bring To The Table

• Customer Interaction Skills: Clear communication when taking orders in person or by phone
• Food Preparation Skills: Experience preparing deli products, including slicing, assembling, and portioning
• Product Knowledge: Understanding of deli meats, cheeses, prepared foods, and hot case items

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Ability to operate slicers and food preparation equipment following training and safety guidelines
• Basic math skills for weighing, portioning, and transactions
• Availability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Prior food service or customer service experience preferred
