Job summary

Shaw’s and Star Market in Maine is seeking a friendly Deli Clerk to help prepare fresh foods, slice meats and cheeses, and greet customers with efficient, courteous service. You’ll keep the deli stocked and clean, manage grab‑and‑go items, monitor freshness, and assist with orders while staying busy in a fast‑paced environment.

No matter the shift, you’ll follow safety guidelines, support teammates, and contribute to a welcoming store atmosphere.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old or older.
• Operate slicers and food preparation equipment safely.
• Basic math skills for weighing, portioning, and transactions.
• Availability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Prior food service or customer service experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare deli products, slice and portion meats and cheeses.
• Maintain clean, stocked, and appealing display cases throughout the day.
• Assist customers with grab‑and‑go items and take orders as needed.
• Monitor product freshness and temperature, rotate stock.
• Follow food safety and company procedures; work with team to keep the department running smoothly.

Job description

As a Deli Clerk, your day is centered around preparing fresh food and creating a welcoming experience for customers. You’re often the first stop for something ready to enjoy, helping customers choose from deli meats, cheeses, hot foods, and prepared items while keeping service friendly and efficient. From slicing meats to preparing grab‑and‑go options, your work helps keep customers coming back.

Another slice of the role is keeping the department stocked, clean, and ready throughout the day. You’ll prepare hot and cold items, maintain organized displays, and monitor product freshness and temperature. Between restocking, taking orders, and working with equipment, the day stays active, making it a strong fit for someone who enjoys staying busy in a fast‑paced environment.

What You Bring To The Table

• Customer Interaction Skills: Clear communication when taking orders in person or by phone
• Food Preparation Skills: Experience preparing deli products, including slicing, assembling, and portioning
• Product Knowledge: Understanding of deli meats, cheeses, prepared foods, and hot case items
• Attention to Detail: Accuracy in portioning, labeling, pricing, and order completion
• Organization & Time Management: Managing multiple tasks while maintaining workflow and service speed
• Merchandising Awareness: Keeping display cases stocked, clean, and visually consistent
• Cash Handling: Processing transactions and making accurate change using register systems (varies by location)
• Operational Awareness: Following food safety, sanitation, and company procedures
• Adaptability: Comfort working in a fast‑paced environment with changing customer demand
• Physical Capability: Comfort with standing for extended periods, lifting product up to 35lbs, and working in varying temperatures
