Job summary

Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is seeking researchers to transform unstructured data into actionable insights for national defense. You will formulate questions, apply statistical and machine learning techniques, and work with DOW data to support uptime and readiness analyses.

The role emphasizes clear communication to non-technical audiences, collaboration within the Sustainment Group, and delivering results to senior Defense officials while maintaining the highest security standards.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a STEM field (Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, Biology, CS) or OR/Data Science or other data-intensive field; OR
  • Master's + 6+ years data science experience; OR
  • Master's + military logistics, supply, or maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate research questions from unstructured problems and data.
  • Apply mathematical modeling and data science methods to derive insights for resource management.
  • Explore raw data from DOW databases and contribute to the data processing pipeline.
  • Conduct independent research while collaborating with the group to develop methods and tools.
  • Present findings to Defense officials through oral presentations and written reports.
