Job summary

Maricopa County is seeking an experienced investigator for the Office of the Legal Defender. The role involves evaluating evidence, examining crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, and helping develop defense strategies.

You would locate witnesses, conduct field investigations, testify in court, and collaborate with attorneys and staff. The position supports indigent clients, offers hybrid scheduling, tuition reimbursement, and a strong wellness program.

Qualifications

• Three years of related investigative experience.
• High school diploma required.
• Combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Review and evaluate evidence, crime scenes and case-related documents.
• Prepare investigative summaries, presentations and/or diagrams.
• Assist in the development of defense strategies and case theories.
• Testify in court and conduct jail visits.
• Locate and interview potential witnesses in defense of criminal cases; may require in-state/out-of-state travel.
• Conduct field investigations, including taking photos, videotaping, obtaining witness statements, and preparing courtroom and crime scene diagrams.
• Interface with criminal authorities, investigators from other law enforcement agencies, and related agencies.
• Use and maintain cameras, video and recording devices, computers, vehicles and related equipment.
• Serve subpoenas and provide witness transportation as needed.
