Job summary

Jay Peak is seeking a lifeguard to monitor activities in swimming areas, enforce safety rules, and assist guests. The role requires strong swimming ability, good communication, and flexible availability including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

SUMMARY

Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provides assistance to swimmers by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (include the following, other duties may be assigned)
  • Guest safety is the most important concern of the lifeguard. All lifeguards should do everything possible to maintain an accident free environment by watching for potential problems proactively.
  • Every lifeguard has the responsibility of covering their assigned zone using the 10/20 scanning rule. This means that the lifeguard has 10 seconds to recognize a problem within their zone and 20 seconds to respond to and reach that problem.
  • Monitoring and maintaining control over queue areas and slide towers.
  • Insuring that the waterpark is clean and free from trash.
  • Performing daily opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Supervises and provides surveillance of swimmers and guests during park hours and special events.
  • Enforces the rules and regulations and renders appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Advises aquatics management of unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
  • Possesses a general knowledge of the activity pools and flume attractions.
  • Assists guests in a polite and expedient manner.
  • Performs daily routine chores and maintenance of waterpark to ensure neat and orderly appearance.
  • Handles and communicates with guests on a one-on-one basis in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Maintains a businesslike atmosphere in the Guard area at all times.
  • Maintains a clean and neat appearance and professional conduct at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned, which could be directly related, or un-related to original position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Certification in First Aid, CPR and NPWLTP (Must pass Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training).

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to complete a 200 yard swim, tread water for 2 minutes with hands above the water and retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of an 8 foot pool as well as complete two additional deep water rescues.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide expert care, sensitive consideration and efficient service to guests.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must have full availability including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be 16 years of age.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, hand-arm vibration, hazardous noise, risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

RESORT CONDITIONS

This is a Winter Resort Area. It requires that work venues are varied, and in many cases include steep stairways, multilevel buildings and outdoor work areas, subject to very cold, sometimes wet or very sunny work sites. Some facilities are located at the base or bottom area and some are semi-remote and can only be reached by traveling via chair lift(s), skis or snowboards. Walking surfaces are frequently frozen, sloped and slippery. Proper footwear is a must, indoors and out. Work days and hours, as well as the number of hours required will vary, with an emphasis on weekends and holidays.
