Job summary

Capital Sand Company in Jefferson City, MO is seeking a full-time deckhand/unloading operator for its fleet. The role requires hands-on maintenance, line handling, and assisting the Captain with navigation and tow operations.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of deckhand experience on inland rivers (preferred).
  • Able to perform basic vessel maintenance and operate small deck equipment.
  • Capable of reading English instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Willing to travel overnight and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Assist the Captain with lookout and navigation on deck and secure tow.
  • Handle ropes and cables to tow or secure barges to towboat or dredge.
  • Perform routine maintenance on vessels including oil changes and deck equipment servicing.
  • Assist with dredge operator maintenance tasks such as pump maintenance and screen changes.
  • Maintain deck and interior cleanliness of boats, dredges, and related vessels.
  • Assist with vessel inspections, shift checks, and safety drills.
  • Support with fueling dredge and tow boat operations.
  • Observe and comply with Coast Guard requirements and company safety policies.

Job description

Capital Sand Company is recruiting a full‑time deckhand/unloading operator for its fleet in Jefferson City, MO.

Position type: Full‑time. Rotation: 5 days a week, 12‑hour shifts with occasional Saturdays. Must be within traveling distance of Jefferson City and be willing to do overnight travel.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the boat Captain with lookout/navigation and maintain a watch on deck, calling distances, and securing tow.
  • Handle ropes and cables to make tow/break tow of barges to towboat, dredge, or secure in fleet.
  • Perform general maintenance of vessels, including oil changes and servicing deck equipment such as winches, ratchets, and water pumps.
  • Assist the dredge operator with maintenance tasks, including dredge pump maintenance and screen changes.
  • Clean debris from the deck of barges, tow boat, and dredge.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the interior and exterior of dredge or towboat, including the galley and engine room.
  • Paint and chip boats, dredges, decks, and superstructures to keep vessels looking presentable.
  • Assist with shift inspections of vessels.
  • Build and assemble tow.
  • Participate in safety training, drills, and meetings to ensure overall vessel and crew safety.
  • Assist with fueling dredge and tow boat.
  • Observe and comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and U.S. Coast Guard requirements.
  • Suggest corrective actions to improve plant and equipment performance and assist with implementation.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Cross‑train and learn other job functions within the dredging crew to allow crew members flexibility throughout the week.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
Requirements
  • At least 1 year of previous deckhand experience on inland rivers (preferred).
  • Ability to perform maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Physical capability: frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, kneeling, balancing, pushing or pulling, repetitive use of legs, lifting up to 50 lbs., and carrying up to 75 lbs.; excellent eye/hand coordination.
  • Valid driver’s license (preferred) and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to do overnight travel, work overtime, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must pass a pre‑physical, drug test/alcohol screen, and background check.
  • Strong work ethic and proven track record.
  • Ability to read and understand the English language.
  • Not afraid of working on/around water.
  • Training or working knowledge of MSHA and Coast Guard regulations is a plus.
  • Welding experience and mechanical experience are a plus.
