Job summary

Host Crewing, LLC is seeking a Deckhand to support the daily operations of the push boat at United Bulk Terminals in Davant, LA. You will work with the Captain to move the fleet safely, perform line handling, maintenance, and inspections, and communicate clearly with the crew.

Flexibility is required for a 2 weeks on / 1 week off rotation, including nights, weekends, and various weather conditions. TWIC is required and prior tug experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Prior deckhand experience aboard a tug with fleet operations preferred.
  • TWIC credential must be active.
  • Ability to work 2 weeks on / 1 week off, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Assist captain in safe daily operation of push boat.
  • Make up and break down tug to/from barges.
  • Inspect and pump barge voids; inspect mooring equipment.
  • Maintain lines and rigging; tie up barges; assist shoreside line handlers.
  • Communicate clearly in English with crew via radios.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on tug and barges.

In 2019, T. Parker Host acquired United Bulk Terminals (UBT) on Mile 55 of the Mississippi River as one of the largest bulk terminals in the U.S. Gulf, specializing in coal and petcoke. This 1,200 acre property in Davant, Louisiana is capable of extensive loading, discharging and storage – with deep‑water docks, fleeting capacity for 500 barges and over 40 pieces of heavy equipment to handle cargo loads.

Since the acquisition, HOST has made extensive improvements in systems and equipment, making the facility safer, more environmentally friendly, and more efficient to better serve our customers.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work with Captain to ensure the safe and reliable daily operation of their push boat
  • Work with Captain to ensure safe and reliable daily movements of the United Bulk Terminals fleet
    • Make‑up and break down tug to/from barges
    • Inspect and, if necessary, pump barge voids
    • Inspect fleet mooring equipment, including dolphins, monopiles, buoys, cables and lines
    • Install, remove and inspect barge navigation/running lights as necessary
    • Maintain barge mooring lines and cut/splice new lines as necessary
    • Tie up barges as directed and assist shoreside line handlers
    • Handle line boat rigging and account for facility owned rigging
  • Communicate in clear, well‑spoken English with other crew members in person and over radios
  • Perform regularly scheduled routine and emergency maintenance and repair of primary tug, barges and assist tugs, including chipping, scaling and painting
  • Handle lines on barge/tug and dock when required
  • Perform general cleaning of Tug as directed by Captain or Port Captain
  • Perform general and preventative maintenance of tug machinery as directed by the Captain or Port Captain
Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Previous experience as a Deckhand aboard a tug engaged in fleet work, preferred
  • TWIC
  • Ability to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
  • Ability to work 2 weeks on / 1 week off schedule (unless otherwise agreed), around the clock shifts and holidays and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible
Physical Requirements
  • Must meet “fit for duty” requirements upon job offer (pre‑employment physical and drug test)
  • The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces
  • Must be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders.
  • Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.)
  • Must be comfortable working aboard boats and barges using heavy lines, winches, and mechanical tools for repairs
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work at protected heights up to 160 feet
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
