Job summary

NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is seeking an experienced Agency Attorney to join the Collections Law Unit. The role focuses on debt collection, including ECB and tax warrants, and requires strong research and litigation support across DOF divisions.

Minimum qualifications include NYS Bar admission and relevant US legal experience post-admission. Remote work up to 2 days/week is possible under the agency pilot program. Residency in NYC is not required.

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar; and either 1 year of US legal experience after admission or 6 months as an Agency Attorney Interne.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to handle complex matters.
• Experience with legal collections and bankruptcy is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform legal research and draft memoranda, legal documents and analyses related to debt collection matters.
• Provide legal advice and counsel to DOF’s Collections Division and other divisions.
• Research and review debt for collections.
• Advise on bankruptcy issues and coordinate with the Law Department.
• Prepare and review enforcement documents, including executions and restraining notices.
• Handle mortgage foreclosure matters and surplus money claims in court.
• Provide legal counsel on Public Improvement Liens, bonds and levy issues.
• Collect debt including ECB and tax warrant debt and support debt collections efforts.
• Prepare legal documents and advise on executions, subpoenas, and related documents.
• Draft, analyze and review legislation, regulations and agency forms.
