DEATH INVESTIGATOR / ST. CHARLES COUNTY - REGIONAL MEDICAL EXAMINER

Position Overview

The purpose of this role is to investigate all deaths in accordance with Missouri Revised Statutes, Chapter 58, under the supervision of the Chief Death Investigator.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Receive and screen initial death reports to determine jurisdiction and scope of investigation.
  2. Investigate suspicious, unnatural, or violent deaths, including follow-up investigations, death notifications, and forensic identifications.
  3. Gather personal information and medical history through interviews and records review to establish cause and manner of death.
  4. Prepare detailed narrative reports for the Chief Death Investigator, analyzing circumstances of death and scene details.
  5. Conduct death scene investigations, coordinate with law enforcement, interview family and witnesses, seize evidence, and photograph scenes while maintaining chain of custody.
  6. Ensure accurate identification of decedents, securing dental, skeletal x-rays, fingerprints, DNA samples, and other evidence.
  7. Assist with family viewing, identification, and proper disposition of the body, including notification of next of kin with compassion and professionalism.
  8. Review medical records for nursing home and hospice deaths, follow up on incomplete reports, and investigate non-natural deaths thoroughly.
  9. Conduct special investigations as requested, such as evaluations of suicide, accidental deaths, police custody deaths, and infant death scene recreations.
  10. Manage cases daily, review new cases, coordinate follow-up, and prepare case folders.
