Job Goal

The Dean of Students is responsible for shaping and sustaining the school's culture and ensuring that the students internalize the school's values for academic excellence and social justice. The Dean provides leadership to the staff and oversees the implementation of school-wide discipline systems and procedures. The Dean of Students provides proactive leadership, engaging all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support student behavior, academic achievement, attendance, and personal, emotional and social development. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principals, counselors, staff, students, and parents towards a positive school climate.

Performance Responsibilities / Specific Job-related Tasks
  1. Contributes towards a safe environment for learning.
  2. Supervision of buildings, grounds, and student activities (before and after school, cafeteria, classrooms, hallways).
  3. Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations.
  4. Investigates, adjudicates, and monitors minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, Friday Schools, and in-school suspension.
  5. Suspends students from school in accordance with Board policy and state law.
  6. Provides peer mediation, restorative circles, and practices to resolve student conflicts.
  7. Maintains disciplinary records in Skyward, as required by MCSC Board Policy.
  8. Addresses the improvement of student attendance and discipline.
  9. Coordinates with outside organizations and agencies.
  10. Oversees all matters of student attendance.
  11. Initiates proactive support for all student attendance issues.
  12. Communicates with parents, teachers, and Student Services teams on student attendance.
  13. Investigates attendance issues.
  14. Assigns students appropriate consequences for truancy.
  15. Advises students and parents on ways to improve attendance.
  16. Oversees student attendance records to ensure all absences are adjudicated.
  17. Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law enforcement agencies and the judicial systems.
  18. Communicates with staff and parents, social workers, counselors, ISS Team, RTI/PBIS Teams, and other student support services.
  19. Serves as liaison between school and home, juvenile and Merrillville Town/Truancy Court, police, and School Resource Officer.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience at high school level (at least 5 years' experience).
  • Indiana State Teaching license with Administrative endorsement or in process of obtaining administrative endorsement preferred.
  • Proven reliability, good organization skills, and ability to work well with students, parents, and staff.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience in leading professional development.
  • Ability to problem-solve and be a self-starter.
Terms of Employment

2025-2026 School year. Full Time, Regular Contract. Medical/dental/vision insurance, short-term life insurance policy, retirement plan, paid time off.
