Job Summary:
The Dean of Learning Commons is a leadership position requiring ahighly motivated leader with the ability to deliver a high level ofinteractive customer service, as well as develop and maintaincollaborative relationships inside and outside of the College. Thesuccessful candidate will have a record of prioritizingeffectively, proactively solving problems, managing multipleprojects simultaneously with high levels of accuracy, and achievinggoals within or ahead of established time frames. The positionserves the staff, faculty, and students at Tarrant County Collegeby providing leadership in the implementation and ongoingactivities associated with the Learning Commons, which is comprisedof library services, supplemental instruction, maker-based, anddiscovery experiences, learning support, and other academicresources.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Performance Requirements*
- Oversees the day-to-day operations related to the LearningCommons and supervise the area managers, including the managementof employee performance and conduct issues, annual performanceevaluations, and conflict management
- Interacts with students in the Learning Commons in ways thatpromote and enhance a growth mindset regarding student learning andmodel such behavior consistently for faculty and staff
- Generates reports to meet institutional needs and grantrequirements; prepare and manage annual budget for the LearningCommons; maintain accurate records regarding expenditure andequipment inventories; review operations on a periodic basis tooptimize cost-effectiveness
- Prepares and delivers presentations to communicate to the Collegecommunity about the Learning Commons role and itscapabilities
- Strictly honor the privacy, security, and confidentiality ofstudent records and other sensitive information according toappropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, andprocedures
- Provide service excellence through courteous, informed,accessible, and professional engagement
- Keeps informed on advancements and changes in the field ofstudent learning, librarianship, and higher education academicsupport services
- Creates a dynamic and innovative Learning Commons environmentbased upon current research and emerging or best practices
General Supervision and Management
- Provides leadership and oversight for departmental activities,including workforce planning, performance management, processimprovement, budgeting, and resource allocation
- Focuses on achieving departmental and organizational objectivesthrough effective management of people, programs, andoperations
- Leads through supervisors and professional staff by establishingpriorities, supporting accountability, and developing teamperformance
Service Excellence
- Collaborates with Learning Commons Deans as well as otherstakeholders to provide consistent and comprehensive services tosupport student success
- Promotes the services provided by the Learning Commons, helpinstitutionalize new practices, and enhance student success, aswell as assure the operational success of the LearningCommons
- Provides leadership for the assessment of the Learning Commons,including the data collection, monitoring, and evaluating progress,and recommending and implementing institutional practices to improve effectiveness on an ongoing basis
- Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, andfollows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of theworksite
- Completes all required training and professional developmentsessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
- Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of theCollege
Supervision
- Works under the general supervision of the Vice President ofAcademic Affairs
*Performs Other Related Tasks as Required
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an accredited institution
- Six (6) years of leadership/administrative experience in asetting with integrated learning services, including technology,learning support, library services, instruction, and/or informationresources
- Three (3) years of experience supervising direct reports,including assigning work, managing performance, coaching employees,and supporting employee development
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Sciences and Information Sciences,Educational Technology, Instructional Technology, or Curriculum andInstruction
- Doctorate from an accredited institution in a field relevant toteaching and learning, STEM education, learning technologies,information science, student success, or a related discipline
- Five (5) years of supervision and management experience in aneducational setting with responsibility for using various academictechnologies or tools, to include evaluation, selection,implementation, and maintenance as it relates to processes,efficiencies, and assessment of the work in integrated learningsupport environments (Learning Commons)
- Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible leadership,supervision, or management experience in higher education,including at least two (2) years in a role such as departmentchair, academic dean, learning-support leader, or comparableacademic administrative position
- Three (3) or more years of experience collaborating with facultyor academic departments to develop, implement, or evaluatecurriculum-connected tutoring, supplemental instruction, embeddedacademic support, information or digital literacy, learningtechnologies, or related student-success initiatives
- Three (3) or more years of experience using student success data,program assessment, or learning outcomes to evaluate academicsupport or instructional programs and drive improvements in coursesuccess, persistence, completion, or student engagement
- Three (3) or more years of experience evaluating, implementing, ormanaging learning technologies, digital resources, artificialintelligence tools, makerspace technologies, or other emerginginstructional resources in a higher education environment
- Two (2) or more years of teaching or direct instructionalexperience in higher education, preferably in STEM, mathematics,technical, applied science, or career and technical educationdisciplines
- Teaching experience in the community college/higher educationsetting
- Experience in leveraging or curating technology resources tosupport students who utilize academic resources remotely or thoseenrolled in online courses
- A track record of successful leadership in integrating access,equity, and student success practices in learning supportenvironments
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Skilled in delivering high-quality customer service and buildingeffective interpersonal relationships, including strong listening,verbal, and written communication skills
- Skilled in using computer applications and enterprise systems,including the Microsoft Office suite and the Microsoft 365platform
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of ateam in collaborative environments, engaging with faculty, staff,and external stakeholders
- Ability to identify routine issues and elevate non-standardproblems using established procedures in a fast-paced workenvironment
- Ability to review basic information and follow policies,procedures, and guidelines when completing assigned tasks
- Ability to coordinate assigned work and communicate effectivelywith faculty and staff to support campus and departmentaloperations
- Ability to maintain a high level of diplomacy and tact, ensuringconfidentiality and discretion with sensitive and confidentialinformation
- Ability to understand, interpret, and retain complex technicalmaterial, policies, procedures, contracts, proposals, charts,graphs, analyses, etc.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, grammatically correct reports,letters, and proposals about technical matters
- Exhibit superior written, verbal, and interpersonalcommunications skills, excellent listening skills, as well asstrong organizational skills
- Ability to conduct classroom and one-on-one training; describekey accomplishments in cutting-edge learning commonsenvironment
