Job description

Introduction

Are you a Licensed Practical Nurse looking for a seasonal opportunity? If so, we invite you to apply to join our team today! The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – North Region – is accepting applications for two (2) full-time seasonal Licensed Practical Nurse positions at Camp Quinebaug in Killingly, CT. This is a Connecticut Licensed Youth Camp that is operated by the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

The incumbents will work under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, Camp Administrator or Camp Manager at Camp Quinebaug. This position (along with a full-time LPN) functions as the camp nurse as mandated for Connecticut Youth Camps licensed by the Office of Early Childhood. Acting as part of the nursing and camp team, these positions are responsible for meeting the needs of the camp, which includes campers and staff working on the campgrounds.

Camp Quinebaug provides a unique summer day camp experience for approximately 100 school aged children with developmental disabilities in northeastern Connecticut. Children with intellectual disabilities and autism are the primary population served at this camp. The camp is located on Wauregan Reservoir in Killingly on 11 acres and its waterfront is the only beach on this beautiful waterway. Arts, Crafts, sports and nature activities, music, swimming, boating and fishing are some of the highlights of the busy camp schedule.

Position Highlights:

  1. Duration | May 30, 2025 – August 18, 2025
  2. Full-time | 1st Shift | 35 Hours per week Monday – Friday | 7:45 am – 2:45 pm

However, work schedule flexibility is required to meet the needs of the agency, including training. Note: The first 2 weeks may be on a part-time schedule and may involve availability until 8:30 pm. Also, the last day of work includes a Saturday to close camp.

About Camp Quinebaug:

Camp Quinebaug, affectionately known as “Camp Q,” is a special needs youth summer day camp in Killingly, Connecticut. Camp Q is operated by the state of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services, in conjunction with the Helping Hands of Camp Quinebaug (non-profit board of directors), and in partnership with local schools and communities. Camp Quinebaug was established in 1972 to provide a unique summer camp experience for school age children with developmental disabilities in Northeastern Connecticut.

The camp is located on Wauregan Reservoir (aka Quinebaug Pond) in Killingly. Camp Q, the reservoir, and surrounding wooded areas make up approximately 11 acres of land. Our swimming area has the only beach on this waterway. Swimming, boating, fishing, nature enrichment, arts and crafts, sports and games highlight the busy camp schedule. Approximately 90-120 campers per season enjoy the benefits of this 6 week, fully accessible camp environment.

FOR THOSE WHO HOLD A PRACTICAL NURSE LICENSE IN A STATE OTHER THAN CONNECTICUT AND WISH TO APPLY FOR A CONNECTICUT LICENSE, PLEASE: Review the eligibility and documentation requirements for CT license by endorsement of an out-of-state license; Complete a CT DPH online application online (expand the ‘Public Health Practitioners’ grouping, select ‘Licensed Practical Nurse’ and then ‘Start’); Request verification of your out-of-state license(s) electronically through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s Nursys System.

To Apply: Applicants must be able to work for the full season. Incumbent must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle license. Incumbents in this class must have a license or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing. Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers. Incumbents must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam.

Must complete all required DDS training: Valid CPR Certification, Abuse & Neglect for children and adults, Physical Management Techniques (PMT), Infection Control, Water Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

Minimum Qualifications

License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have: Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. Previous experience working in a camp setting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Special Requirements

DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
