Job description

Horizontal/Directional Drill Operator and Locator Job Description

The role of a Horizontal/Directional Drill Operator and Locator includes operating horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment, and product support equipment. Perform semi-skilled activities related to HDD locating, and be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures.

DB Operator Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill for the installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
  • Follow prescribed safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment.
  • Set up and clean up the work site, including traffic and pedestrian control.
  • Read utility locates and ensure all applicable permits and locates are complete and onsite.
  • Inspect ongoing work to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications.
  • Level earth to final grade specifications.
  • Perform proper maintenance, including greasing, oiling, and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Lead field teams effectively and efficiently as needed and directed by the supervisor.
Locator Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Confirm bore path with the install foreman and drill operator, including walking the bore path.
  • Perform job site analysis (JSA) and complete related paperwork.
  • Ensure proper clearances for product installation according to standards.
  • Record the depth of the tool head as required.
Essential Education and Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid DOT Health Card
Preferred Skills:
  • Class A Driver’s License (CDL)
Physical Demands:
  • Must be physically fit to handle daily activities involved with the job.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Capable of lifting up to 75 pounds.
