Job summary

Sweeping Corporation of America (SCA) is hiring a Shop Helper in Indianapolis, IN, to support the fleet maintenance team with oil changes, tire service, inspections, and shop operations. You’ll work with diesel mechanics to keep street sweepers and equipment safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Qualified applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be 18+, and pass MVR, background, DOT physical, and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Inspection: Follow safety protocols and observe precautions.
  • Execution: Complete assigned parts processing, pick-ups, and deliveries efficiently.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate vehicles and basic equipment safely.
  • Material Handling: Identify, pick, and handle parts with proper storage.
  • Reporting: Report equipment issues and safety concerns; escalate as needed.
  • Communication: Coordinate with technicians, team leads, and other departments.

Your daily impact:

As our next Shop Helper, you'll play an important role in supporting our fleet maintenance team by assisting with oil changes, tire service, equipment inspections, and general shop operations. Working alongside experienced diesel mechanics, you'll help prepare and maintain our street sweepers and support equipment, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, and ready to serve the communities that depend on them.

  • Safety & Inspection: Follow safety protocols and observe all precautions while performing tasks to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Execution: Complete all assigned parts processing, pick-ups, and deliveries efficiently and accurately.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate vehicles and basic equipment safely to support parts transport and inventory tasks.
  • Material Handling: Identify, pick, and handle parts correctly, ensuring proper storage and organization.
  • Reporting: Immediately report any equipment issues, malfunctions, near misses, crashes, or injuries. Immediately elevate opportunities, work issues, or safety concerns to management.
  • Communication: Coordinate with technicians, team leads, and other departments to support workflow and address urgent needs.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Maintain clean driving records, follow company policies, and ensure all required documentation is accurate.
  • Adaptability & Problem Solving: Respond quickly to emergencies, shifting priorities, and unforeseen challenges in deliveries and inventory.

  • Work Environment & Exposure:Constant work outdoors with regular exposure to weather, elements, and traffic; occasional exposure to loud noise, dust/debris, and jarring conditions; limited exposure to chemicals.
  • Physical Demands:Frequent sitting and walking/standing; occasional bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, pushing/pulling; limited stair climbing and crawling; ability to lift and carry up to 50lbsat varying heights, including overhead.
  • Cognitive & Sensory Requirements:Continuous reading, screen use, mental focus, and hand-eye coordination throughout the workday.
  • Equipment & Tools:Operation of specialized equipment and use of hand controls, foot controls, and fine motor skills.
  • Safety & Protective Gear:Requireduse ofappropriate PPE, including high-visibility apparel, eye, ear, hand, foot, head, lung, and skin protection.
