Job summary

City of Newton is seeking a Custodian to perform cleaning and maintenance across City facilities, including interiors, exteriors, and common areas. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and a Massachusetts driver’s license.

You will work Monday through Friday, 6:00am–2:00pm, with duties ranging from cleaning to basic maintenance. Candidates should be able to read safety rules, interpret procedures, and communicate effectively with staff and the public.

Qualifications

• Reads and interprets safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manual.
• Writes routine reports and correspondence.
• Able to present information effectively to citizens, visitors or employees.

Responsibilities

• Ensures walls, halls, rooms, common and other areas are washed, swept, scrubbed and mopped; floors and rugs vacuumed; furniture cleaned; windows and fixtures cleaned and sanitized.
• Maintains buildings and grounds; secures building for winter; sets up or removes window coverings; performs general maintenance tasks.
• Performs mechanical, electrical, and system maintenance; replaces filters and lubricates equipment as needed.
• Inspects and tests building and mechanical equipment for proper operation.
• Addresses issues to keep library operations running smoothly.
• Maintains supplies and responds to cleanliness concerns.
