Job summary

First Student is seeking a Diesel Mechanic II in Newark, DE to maintain and repair school buses, ensuring safety and reliability for students and communities. You will diagnose complex issues, perform engine tune-ups, brake work, and preventive maintenance, while working on a day shift with a strong focus on safety and teamwork.

The role offers a competitive starting pay of $30.00–$31.00/hour, plus a $2,500 hiring bonus and company-paid ASE testing and CDL Class B training/licensing.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of diesel or automotive maintenance and repair experience, or equivalent technical school education.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• CDL Class B or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment – company paid training provided.
• Possession of a mechanic’s tool set to complete all assigned duties.
• Willingness to participate in the ASE certification program (training, testing, and bonuses provided).
• Strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair school buses to ensure safety and reliability.
• Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance including brakes, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, and transmissions.
• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections; complete work orders accurately.
• Assist with mobile emergency repair services when needed.
