Job summary

Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in Chicago, IL is seeking a dedicated Youth Care Specialist to oversee daily operations of the youth milieu during weekday hours, assist with wake-up routines, and implement the Agency’s care framework.

You will coordinate records, provide transportation when needed, manage petty cash and program finances, and model professional, confidential, and culturally sensitive behavior while engaging youth in daily activities and therapeutic interventions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years’ experience working with youth.
  • A valid Illinois driver’s license, ability to drive a van, maintain a clear driving record, and obtain driving approval through the DCFS.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor with discretion.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, plus willingness to learn other software.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate promptly and accurately within the program and with external bodies (schools, medical providers, parents, courts, etc.).
  • Keep all program records and coordinate paperwork with outside agencies and people.
  • Provide transportation for Youth as necessary (morning drop offs).
  • Manage petty cash and financial records of the Youth and program.
  • Manage the milieu during early hours of the day, Monday through Friday.
  • Ensure youth are up to date with medical and dental appointments and records.
  • Provide supportive supervision, guidance, and role modeling for the youth.
  • Engage with youth in daily routines and activities.
  • Develop and support creative interventions for the youth.
  • Apply CPI de-escalation and behavior management techniques.
  • Learn, align with, and execute the Agency’s treatment philosophies and practices.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

Oversee and manage the daily operations of the youth milieu/program during weekday hours, including helping the Youth with their wake-up times and routines. You’ll also handle the clerical tasks for the specific home and support and implement the Agency’s policies, philosophy and framework of care.

In this Role, you will
  • Communicate promptly and accurately within the program/Agency and with external bodies, i.e., schools, medical service providers, parents, courts, etc.
  • Keep all records within the program and coordinate paperwork (i.e., Individual Treatment Plans, education records, incident reports, and any other documentation for youth files, etc.) with outside agencies, organizations, and people.
  • Provide transportation for Youth as necessary, specifically morning drop offs.
  • Manage petty cash and financial records of the Youth and program, as appropriate.
  • Manage the milieu during early hours of the day, Monday thru Friday
  • Ensure youth are up to date with medical and dental appointments and records.
  • Provide supportive supervision, guidance, and role modeling for the youth in the milieu.
  • Engage with youth in daily routines and activities.
  • Develop and support creative interventions for the youth.
  • Employ all aspects of de-escalation and behavior management techniques as outlined in CPI protocol.
  • Learn, align with, and execute the treatment philosophies, modalities, and practices of the Agency.
What we need from you:
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years’ experience working with youth.
  • A valid Illinois driver’s license, ability to drive a van, maintain a clear driving record, and retain driving approval through the department of Children and Family Services.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work both independently and as an active team member.
  • Ability to accept, adopt, and implement feedback from supervisor and team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor while exercising judgment and discretion in work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and professional journals.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to become proficient in other software packages and programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to attend required Agency trainings and maintain necessary training compliance. Flexibility to attend daytime trainings or sessions outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Ability to attend required Agency trainings (including CPR/ First Aid and Crisis Prevention Institute Training) and maintain necessary training compliance. Flexibility to attend daytime trainings or sessions outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Ability and willingness to create, initiate and participate in recreational and therapeutic activities with the youth.
  • Promote, support and role model the use of Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) theory and practice for all co-workers in de-escalating situations.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and goals of the Agency.
Basics Information / Schedule Details

This job is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The schedule Monday-Friday 6am-2pm.

Pay range is between $24-$25/hour
