POSITION SUMMARY:

Plans and implements aquatic programming for the summer day camp program. Ensures the safety of campers and staff. Maintains the pool facilities, locker rooms, and the surrounding area. Supervises lifeguards and swim instructors.

Positions are available at the Lockport Y, KenTon Y, Southtowns Y, and YMCA Camp Eggert.

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week, while the camp program is in session. Must be available to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and implement a safe and skill-oriented YMCA swimming instruction program.
  • Maintain YMCA Buffalo Niagara’s aquatic program standards and ensure compliance with NYS Department of Health regulations. Ensure chlorine levels are adequate and maintain records and reports as required.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and train aquatic staff and camp counselors as needed to carry out the program design.
  • Provide daily oversight and leadership of pool operations. Identify and resolve problems. Implement appropriate discipline techniques and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Ensure effective communication with staff and parents of campers.
  • Develop and maintain positive, open communication between campers and camp staff.
  • Perform administrative functions including attendance, swimming progress reports, and program evaluation.
  • Maintain the safety of the pool environment, lockers/bath house, and the surrounding area. Enforce pool rules. Implement emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Follow and enforce department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces. Enforce PPE compliance.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of program/work areas.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have at least one year of experience in swim instruction and supervision of aquatics staff.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have and maintain:
    • YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
    • CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED (American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Health & Safety Institute)
    • Oxygen Administration and First Aid certification (American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Health & Safety Institute).
