Position Overview
We are seeking a Database Systems Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable, secure data platforms that enable analytics and business insights. The role focuses on developing and operating ETL pipelines, managing relational and cloud-native databases in Azure, and integrating Databricks and Microsoft Fabric to deliver reliable data to BI consumers (Power BI). The ideal candidate combines strong SQL and Python skills with systems engineering experience to automate workflows, optimize performance, and ensure the availability and integrity of data systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement and maintain database schemas, instances, and clusters across on-premises and Azure environments to meet performance, availability and security requirements.
- Develop, test and operate ETL/ELT pipelines and data workflows using Azure services, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric or comparable platforms to ingest, transform and publish datasets.
- Author and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures and Python-based transformations to improve data processing performance and reduce operational costs.
- Collaborate with BI and analytics teams to deliver curated data products and datasets for Power BI, ensuring data quality, consistency and documentation.
- Build and maintain automated deployment pipelines and infrastructure-as-code for database and data platform components; support CI/CD and release processes.
- Implement monitoring, alerting and capacity planning for databases and data pipelines; proactively identify and remediate reliability and performance issues.
- Define and enforce data security, access controls, backup and disaster recovery strategies in line with organizational policies and compliance requirements.
- Work with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, design solutions and support production incidents and post-incident reviews.
- Drive continuous improvement by automating repetitive tasks, documenting runbooks and promoting best practices for data engineering and systems operations.
- Mentor junior engineers, participate in architecture reviews, and contribute to long-term roadmap and platform build decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience designing, building and operating database systems and data pipelines in enterprise environments.
- Strong SQL proficiency and experience writing complex queries, query optimization and indexing strategies.
- Proficient in Python for data processing, automation and tooling.
- Hands-on experience with Azure data services (Azure SQL, Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory) and familiarity with Azure architecture and security.
- Experience with Databricks and the Spark ecosystem; familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or comparable lakehouse platforms.
- Practical experience building ETL/ELT workflows, orchestration and automation of data pipelines.
- Familiarity with Power BI and delivering data models or datasets for reporting and analytics.
- Experience with database administration tasks: backups, restores, high-availability, performance tuning and capacity planning.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills; experience working in cross-functional agile teams.
- Preferred: certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate, Databricks certification or relevant cloud certifications.
- Preferred: experience with infrastructure-as-code, Git-based CI/CD, and scripting for system build and automated workflows.
