Job summary

grabjobs is seeking a remote Database Engineer to design, implement, and maintain scalable, secure cloud database solutions. You will collaborate with product managers, engineers, and security experts to support federal standards and client expectations.

The ideal candidate has strong cloud DB architecture, data migration, performance optimization, and security compliance experience, with US citizenship and ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; Master's preferred.
• Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server and distributed SQL platforms (CockroachDB) is essential, plus familiarity with Amazon RDS.
• Knowledge of distributed SQL/NewSQL, Parquet/Delta Parquet formats, and scripting in Terraform, Bash, and Python is highly desirable.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance; US citizenship is mandatory.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication.

Responsibilities

About The Role

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Database Engineer to join our remote team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable, secure, and high-performance cloud-based database solutions. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, engineers, security specialists, and analysts to support our mission of delivering innovative staffing solutions that meet federal standards and client expectations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cloud database architecture, data migration, performance optimization, and security compliance. This position offers the flexibility of remote work, allowing you to contribute effectively from any location while supporting our ongoing projects and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, with a preference for candidates holding a master's degree.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases such as SQL Server and distributed SQL platforms like CockroachDB is essential, along with familiarity with cloud-managed database services such as Amazon RDS.
• Knowledge of distributed SQL or NewSQL database platforms, columnar formats like Parquet and Delta Parquet, and scripting automation tools such as Terraform, Bash, and Python is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance are required.
• US citizenship is mandatory due to clearance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, secure, and highly available cloud database architectures, focusing on relational data modeling and schema design for large-scale migration projects.
• Evaluate and select appropriate database technologies based on specific application needs, including distributed SQL databases suitable for hybrid cloud environments.
• Execute structured data migration pipelines across multiple environments—development, testing, pre-production, and production—ensuring data integrity, minimal downtime, and optimal performance.
• Manage data staging processes using cloud object storage solutions and coordinate pipeline progression through each environment.
• Monitor and optimize database performance utilizing cloud-native and third-party tools, identifying bottlenecks in environments with large datasets and sub-second latency requirements.
• Implement indexing, partitioning, and query optimization strategies to meet stringent performance SLAs.
• Ensure robust security and compliance by implementing access controls, encryption, and auditing mechanisms aligned with data protection regulations such as HIPAA and HL7.
• Regularly review and update security policies to adapt to emerging threats.
• Develop and validate backup and disaster recovery strategies, ensuring migrated data maintains accuracy and structural integrity.
• Create synthetic datasets that mirror production schemas without containing real PII or PHI, facilitating safe testing and validation.
• Automate data transformation, pipeline orchestration, and routine maintenance tasks using scripting languages like Python and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
• Build and maintain ETL workflows utilizing Databricks notebooks and Apache Spark for large-scale data processing, managing data flow from source systems through cloud storage into target databases across different environments.
• Implement cost optimization measures by monitoring resource usage, recommending right-sizing, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
• Collaborate with team members to continuously improve database infrastructure, security, and performance, supporting the organization’s strategic goals and federal compliance standards.
