Job description

The Database Administrator, Mid oversees the stability, performance, and security of enterprise databases that support mission‑critical systems in a highly regulated government environment. The role designs and refines database structures, indexing strategies, and capacity plans to deliver scalable, high‑performing data services across multiple business applications. It leads complex maintenance activities such as patching, upgrades, environment migrations, and recovery exercises while minimizing downtime and coordinating closely with development, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and optimize production and non‑production instances of platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, including advanced schema design, partitioning strategies, and environment‑specific configuration.
  • Design and tune indexing, statistics, and query execution plans to resolve complex performance bottlenecks and ensure predictable response times for high‑volume transactional and reporting workloads.
  • Develop and execute robust backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies (including full, differential, and transaction log approaches) and lead periodic recovery tests for mission‑critical systems.
  • Implement and review advanced security controls such as encryption at rest and in transit, role‑based access models, privileged account management, and auditing to protect sensitive data in highly regulated environments.
  • Lead planning and execution of database software upgrades, patching cycles, and cross‑environment migrations, coordinating with application owners and operations teams to manage risk and downtime.
  • Design and support data integration solutions using ETL tools and scripts to move, transform, and reconcile data across operational databases, data warehouses, and analytics platforms.
  • Perform capacity planning and storage management, including growth forecasting, index maintenance strategies, and archival approaches to balance performance and cost.
  • Troubleshoot complex incidents involving locking, deadlocks, blocking chains, failed jobs, and resource contention, using diagnostic tools and system views to quickly isolate root cause.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 4–7 years of progressive database administration experience with increasing ownership of production environments.
  • Proficiency with relational database systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, including strong understanding of database structures, principles, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with database security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery planning, data warehousing, ETL processes, and data integration tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills supporting cross‑functional collaboration in enterprise environments.
  • Active SECRET security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain clearance as required by the client.
  • U.S. citizenship and willingness to travel less than 10% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with high‑availability and resilience patterns such as clustering, always‑on groups, replication, or other failover technologies in enterprise environments.
  • Hands‑on experience supporting data warehousing and business intelligence workloads, including star schema design and ETL performance tuning.
  • Professional certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional or Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate.
  • Prior experience supporting databases in highly regulated or federal IT environments with formal change, security, and compliance frameworks.
