Job summary

St. Johns River Water Management District is seeking a Database Administrator II or III to design, implement, and maintain district-wide database environments. The role supports modernization of legacy apps, data querying, analytics, and cloud migration efforts.

You will work with PostgreSQL, Oracle, and other data technologies, collaborating with developers and stakeholders to translate data needs into scalable solutions. Strong SQL and Linux/UNIX experience are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in CS or MIS with 3 years of DB admin experience in PostgreSQL/Oracle/MS SQL/MySQL and 2 years Linux/UNIX.
  • Two-year program with 5 years DB admin experience and 2 years Linux/UNIX.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for part of experience.
  • Professional DB admin experience may substitute for college education.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain database engines, app servers, and related core software; optimize structures and data loading.
  • Monitor database performance and SQL statements; diagnose and resolve data issues for users and developers.
  • Define and manage database access controls and user permissions.

Database Administrator II or III,Office of Information Technology

The St. Johns River Water Management District is an environmental agency whose work is focused on ensuring a long-term supply of drinking water, and to protect and restore the health of water bodies in the District’s 18 counties in northeast and east-central Florida. The Office of Information Technology is responsible for developing and managing technology solutions which support the District ’s missions of water quality, water supply, flood protection, and natural systems .

Job Summary: This is professional work participating in the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of District-wide database environments. This position will be directly involved in supporting a number of technology initiatives including the modernization of legacy in-house developed applications; refreshing data query, analytics, and reporting; migrating from Oracle products (Database, WebLogic, BI, WebCenter) to other solutions like PostgreSQL; and off-loading current on-premises workloads to leverage cloud computing resources.

Job duties include:
  • Installs, configures, and maintains database engines, application servers, and related core technology software. Configures operating systems and software for optimal performance. Develops software programs for data loading and extraction processes . Implements new database application structures and make modifications to existing structures.
  • Monitors performance of databases and related systems. Develops and implements recommendations for improvement. Analyzes database query performance and optimize SQL statements. Diagnoses and resolves database-related errors and provides support for end users and developers facing data issues.
  • Defines, develops, and implements user access control standards for databases. Provision of user accounts and permissions according to established access control standards and guidelines.
  • Participates in the selection of data structure modifications to address data distribution changes to ensure optimal database performance. Serves as a lead technical resource for database projects, assisting as needed in all phases of project s from design and programming to operation and maintenance. Collaborate s with developers to design new and modify existing database applications. Collaborate s with customers and stakeholders to understand data needs and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Reviews proposed database applications to ensure compliance with established database or software standards. Develops and tests database backup and recovery procedures and ensures compliance with business continuity standards. Assesses and implements new technologies in support of the Agency's program goals and objectives. Implements technology solutions following established standards for business continuity, change management, software development, and documentation.
Knowledge Of:
  • Relational database concepts; computer programming; practical business experience in designing and implementing applications and systems; performance tuning for relational database client/server applications; application development methodologies; structured analysis techniques; data modeling; data repository tools ; project management tools and methodologies.
Skilled In:
  • Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Oracle Database administration; related tools and technologies including WebLogic
Ability To:
  • Document and clearly communicate through written and verbal skills; exhibit and maintain professional interpersonal skills with all levels of District staff ; lead technology projects from conception to completion; serve as a technical resource for peers by providing guidance and support.
Preferred Experience:
  • RedHat or Rocky Linux
  • Virtualization platforms such as Linux KVM, VMware, or Nutanix
  • Docker container technology
  • Python programming
  • Qlik Cloud
Minimum Qualifications:

Database Administrator II requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or management information systems and three (3) years of experience in database administration of at least one of the following: PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL and two (2) years experience with any variant of Linux or UNIX operating system (experience may overlap).

Or completion of a two-year program of study from a vocational/technical school or community college in computer science or management information systems and five (5) years of experience in database administration of at least one of the following: PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL and two (2) years experience with any variant of Linux or UNIX operating system (experience may overlap).

An advanced degree in computer science or management of information systems may substitute for a portion of the required experience.

Professional experience in database administration may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Database Administrator III requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or management information systems and four (4) years of experience in database administration of at least one of the following: PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL; including one year experience performing the physical design and implementation of a large multi-user relational database and three (3) years of experience with any variant of Linux or UNIX operating system (experience may overlap).

Or completion of a two-year program of study from a vocational/technical school or community college in computer science or management information systems and six (6) years of experience in database administration of at least one of the following: PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL; including one year experience performing the physical design and implementation of a large multi-user relational database and three (3) years of experience with any variant of Linux or UNIX operating system (experience may overlap).

An advanced degree in computer science or management of information systems may substitute for a portion of the required experience.

Professional experience in database administration may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

General office environment; some travel (occasional weekend and evening work), hours worked over 40 in a single week earn comp time.

Licenses:

Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

Starting Salary Range:

Database Administrator II: $67,496.00 - $87,734.40

Database Administrator III: $77,272.00 - $100,443.20

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
