Hybrid role, onsite at 1980 West Broad St, Columbus, 5 days a week
The candidate will support The Ohio Department of Transportation’s Database Administration team, focusing on tasks for the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) team.
This role is crucial for maintaining the performance, availability, security, and integrity of our SQL Server database environments, both on-premises and in Azure Synapse. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with complex SQL Server infrastructures, including AlwaysOn availability groups, and with designing, implementing, and maintaining ETL processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). They will also troubleshoot database issues, optimize query performance, and ensure smooth data platform operations.
Responsibilities:
- Administer and monitor Azure Synapse Analytics environments, including data warehousing and data integration.
- Design, develop, and maintain ETL packages using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
- Recommend database architecture improvements for new use cases.
- Lead the implementation of a new Data Lake within Azure Synapse.
- Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and apply performance tuning strategies.
- Troubleshoot database issues such as connectivity, performance, and data integrity problems.
- Maintain database security policies, ensuring data integrity and compliance.
- Collaborate with application teams to optimize database design and queries.
- Document configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Stay updated with the latest SQL Server and Azure data platform technologies and best practices.
Experience:
- Manage SQL Server databases across development to production environments.
- Configure and maintain database servers, monitor system health, and ensure high performance, availability, and security, with emphasis on SQL Server High Availability.
- Apply data modeling techniques, build SSIS packages, and support system integration efforts.
- Analyze and resolve issues in real-time, automate processes, and assist with query tuning and schema optimization.
- Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours.
- Mentor peers and share technical expertise.
- Experience with decommissioning and migrating legacy systems.
Minimum Requirements:
- 4-year college degree or equivalent technical study; advanced studies preferred.
- 10+ years of MS SQL Server Administration experience.
- 5+ years of MS Azure SQL Server Administration experience.
- 2+ years administering Azure Synapse Analytics.
- Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO) using native tools.
- Experience with backups, restores, and recovery models.
- Experience with Azure Data Lake architecture.
- Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
- Experience with Windows Server and Active Directory.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to change.
- Effective multi-tasking and switching between activities and teams.
