Job summary

State of Ohio – Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) is seeking a Database Administrator 3 (DBA3) with 5+ years of enterprise Microsoft SQL Server experience to manage on‑premises and Azure environments. Responsibilities include performance tuning, backups, HA/DR, security, and developer support.

The position requires strong T‑SQL, SSMS, and Azure skills, plus experience with Always On, replication, and automation. Remote initially, then onsite in Columbus, OH.

Qualifications

• 5+ years on enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments (on-premises and Azure).
• SSMS and database internals expertise required.
• Advanced T-SQL skills required.
• Performance monitoring and tuning including indexing, query optimization, blocking, and deadlocks.
• Backup, recovery, HA/DR experience.
• Experience with Always On, Log Shipping, Failover Cluster Instances, or Replication.
• Security & Compliance experience including RBAC, encryption, and access management.
• Experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
• Experience with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.
• Azure-based migration/integration between on‑premises and Azure.
• SSIS/ETL workflows experience.
• Strong developer support and code review for stored procedures, triggers, functions, and complex T-SQL.
• Scripting with T-SQL, PowerShell, or CLI tools.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances across production, staging, and development environments.
• Monitor and optimize database performance, system health, and resource utilization.
• Design, implement, and test backup, recovery, HA, and DR solutions.
• Administer Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
• Configure Azure database backup, monitoring, security, migration, and disaster recovery solutions.
• Use Azure Monitor and Log Analytics for database monitoring and troubleshooting.
• Manage database security, RBAC, permissions, encryption, and sensitive credentials using Azure Key Vault.
• Support developers with schema design, table structures, data types, stored procedures, triggers, functions, and complex queries.
• Develop automation scripts for index maintenance, integrity checks, statistics updates, backups, monitoring, and reporting.
• Provide Tier III technical support for critical database issues.
• Develop database strategies and contribute to solution architecture and business‑case development.
• Create and maintain technical documentation covering installation, monitoring, security, configuration, migration, and best practices.
• Mentor junior staff and provide technical guidance.
• Collaborate with IT Architecture, CIO, IT Managers, and security teams to meet agency requirements.

Position Overview

The State of Ohio DRC is seeking a Database Administrator 3 (DBA3) with 5+ years of hands‑on enterprise Microsoft SQL Server experience across on-premises and Azure environments. The DBA3 will be responsible for database administration, performance tuning, backup/recovery, HA/DR, security, Azure database platforms, automation, and developer support.

Required Skills
