Overview

Job Title: Database Administrator

Department: This position is within FSU’s Department of Northwest Regional Data Center (NWRDC).

Responsibilities
  • Support all aspects of the Oracle Database environment(s)—both on-premises and in OCI—including Oracle software installation, database configuration, administration, monitoring, maintenance, support, application deployment, SQL tuning, and customer service.
  • Provide physical Oracle DBA support for the Oracle Database service offering at NWRDC across multiple data centers and Oracle Cloud services.
  • Administer Oracle databases and ASM instances; manage RMAN backups; provide 24x7 support across NWRDC data centers and Oracle OCI cloud services and other clouds.
  • Monitor incident, request, and task queues; respond according to published time expectations; participate in on-call, overtime, and emergency duties as required.
  • Support customer applications, debug and optimize SQL code; advise customers regarding application design and development issues.
  • Follows established NWRDC database processes and procedures; develops documentation for Oracle database support processes, systems, and procedures.
  • Participate in change management procedures; provide second-level technical support to internal and external customers.
  • Research, analyze, design, test, and implement new database technologies and services to deliver cost-effective and technically efficient solutions; maintain continual training to update skills.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities per NWRDC policy; contribute to ongoing process improvements.
  • Support a wide range of state and local government and K-12 organizations, with a 24x7 operational requirement, and be prepared to respond as essential staff.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other appropriate degree and two years of experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent with six years of related experience. (Note: or a combination of appropriate post-high school education and experience equal to six years.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Management tools, RAC, DataGuard, performance tuning, migrations, upgrades, and patching.
  • Oracle Database, OEM and Cloud certifications.
What to Expect
  • Ideal candidate is a strong self-starter who wants to expand knowledge of Oracle database services, work with customers to resolve issues, improve performance, and maintain work-life balance in a fully remote position with FSU/NWRDC.
  • Occasional on-call availability; ability to provide restoration level services.
Typical Day

A typical day includes monitoring system dashboards, OEM reports, backup and Data Guard/DR reports, and ticketing/change management systems. After morning stand-up meetings, you will work to resolve issues, participate in scheduled changes and projects, and collaborate with a distributed Oracle database team across time zones. Internal Oracle Team communications and Linux support via O365/Teams are continually available.

First 60–90 Days

You will undergo process and tool training to align with NWRDC and Oracle Team processes, confirm after-hours support capabilities, and work with a senior DBA to gain proficiency. After cross-training, you will be able to provide after-hours on-call support.
