Job summary

Unum Group, located in Portland, ME, seeks a Data Scientist I for the CX Analytics team. You will apply data science, analytics, and AI to transform data into customer insights that drive better experiences and business outcomes.

You will build analytical solutions, create modeling-ready data, and develop predictive models to explain behavior and forecast outcomes, partnering with stakeholders to automate where possible.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field preferred.
  • 2 years of professional experience or equivalent.
  • Experience using APIs, file I/O, databases, and analysis libraries.
  • Working knowledge of Jupyter notebooks and/or statistical packages.
  • Understanding of process mapping and scripting to automate processes.
  • Exposure to data mining and web scraping.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools and static/dynamic visuals.
  • Solid understanding of statistical inference and regression.
  • Basic understanding of ML techniques like random forests and neural nets.
  • SQL queries across multiple tables/databases.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute analytical solutions to produce actionable insights and drive business value.
  • Integrate large data volumes from DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata to build data assets.
  • Create a modeling-ready data framework using validation and reconciliation.
  • Construct ML models to forecast behavior or identify risk.

  • Stay grounded in current statistical methods and tools.

Job description

Unum Group’s Customer Experience organization is hiring a Data Scientist I for the CX Analytics team in a hybrid setup in Portland, ME. In this role, you will apply data science, analytics, and AI to transform structured and unstructured data into insights that support better customer experiences and stronger business outcomes.

Working within the CX Analytics team, you will build and deliver analytical solutions, create modeling-ready data assets, and develop predictive models to explain observed behavior, forecast expected outcomes, and identify risk. You will also partner with stakeholders to interpret results and help solutions fit into existing business processes through automation.

What you’ll do
  • Design and execute analytical solutions using statistical, optimization, simulation, and data mining methods to produce actionable insights and drive business value.
  • Integrate large volumes of data from sources including DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata to build data assets and support analyses.
  • Use validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to create a modeling-ready data framework.
  • Construct machine learning models to explain events, forecast expected behavior, or identify risk using scoring or clustering.
  • Interpret analytical results and communicate findings and potential value to your manager.
  • Support solution integration into existing business processes using automation techniques.
  • Stay grounded in the theory and application of current and emerging statistical methods and tools.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (preferred).
  • 2 years of professional experience (preferred) or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Experience using APIs, file I/O, databases, and analysis libraries.
  • Working knowledge of Jupyter notebooks and/or statistical packages.
  • Understanding of process mapping and demonstrated use of scripting languages to automate processes.
  • Exposure to data mining and web scraping.
  • Working knowledge of two or more data visualization tools, with proficiency in static data visualization, plus basic understanding of dynamic visualization.
  • Solid understanding of statistical inference and regression.
  • Basic understanding of machine learning techniques including random forests and neural nets.
  • Basic understanding of feature selection and extraction, including techniques that may involve categorical data analysis, multiple comparisons, Central Limit Theorem, bootstrapping, and permutation tests.
  • Expertise writing complex SQL queries that join multiple tables and databases.
  • Ability to independently explore databases and tables to identify best data sources for a business problem.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex SQL queries created by others with little guidance.
  • Basic communication skills, exposure to the financial services industry, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize while managing multiple projects and due dates.
  • Ability to coach or mentor team members, respond quickly and positively to change, and adhere to technical best practices by collaborating with teammates to deliver high-quality output.
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter and lifelong learner with strong curiosity.
  • Basic understanding of their organization.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this yearly role is USD 60,500 - 123,400.
