Job summary

Auto-Owners Insurance seeks a data scientist to join our analytics teams in Lansing, MI with potential home-office flexibility up to 3 days per week. The role requires building and evaluating models on large data sets, collaborating with software developers and business leaders, and documenting methods for governance and reuse.

The ideal candidate has a Master’s in a quantitative field, strong SQL and ML toolkit experience, and 2–4 years of relevant experience; PhD is a plus, insurance industry

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline.
  • Proficiency in SQL or other data querying language.
  • Understanding of statistical and machine learning techniques including classification, regression, clustering, feature engineering, decision trees, gradient boosting, deep learning.
  • Experience with common data science toolkits such as R, Python, TensorFlow, SQL, Scikit-learn, Keras.
  • Aptitude and willingness to learn new things and teach others.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • 2-4 years of professional experience building models with large data sets.
  • (Preferred) PhD in a quantitative discipline.
  • (Preferred) Experience in the insurance industry.

Responsibilities

  • Use statistical and machine learning techniques to build models that address business needs and comply with regulatory requirements
  • Work with large, complex data sets and develop a comprehensive knowledge of Auto-Owners data structures and metrics
  • Conduct ad-hoc analysis and present results clearly at multiple-levels of stakeholders through visual displays of quantitative information

This specific role could have the flexibility to work from home up to 3 days per week. All candidates must have the ability to work in our home office in Lansing, Michigan from time to time.
