Help Shape the Future of Data-Driven Decision Making at GTR

Are you passionate about turning complex data into meaningful insight that drives real-world outcomes?

At GTR, we're looking for an ambitious and forward-thinking Data Scientist to help us unlock the power of data, machine learning and advanced analytics across one of the UK's largest train operating companies.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in establishing GTR's first in-house machine learning capability, helping us better understand future risks, opportunities and operational outcomes. You'll work at the heart of our Data & AI function, developing predictive models that support smarter decision making, improve performance and create tangible value for our customers and business.

About the Role

As a Data Scientist in the Central Data & Ai function, you will use advanced analytics, statistical modelling and machine learning techniques to extract forward-looking insights from large and complex datasets across multiple business domains.

Working closely with operational and business stakeholders, you'll help define business problems, test hypotheses and develop predictive and prescriptive models that influence decision making across commercial, operational and safety functions.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a modern enterprise data environment, leveraging over 40 DataHub products that support more than 2,000 active users. As GTR continues to expand its data and AI capabilities, you'll play an important role in shaping standards, approaches and best practices for data science across the organisation.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Developing predictive and prescriptive models using curated DataHub datasets.
  • Applying statistical and machine learning techniques to identify trends, risks and future outcomes.
  • Working with stakeholders to frame business challenges, define hypotheses and design effective interventions.
  • Translating complex analytical findings into clear, actionable insights for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Explaining model assumptions, limitations and risks to support informed decision making.
  • Collaborating with Data Engineers to develop data models that support analytical and machine learning use cases.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and improving model performance as business conditions evolve.
  • Contributing to the development of data science standards, governance and best practice across GTR.
  • Supporting the responsible adoption of AI and advanced analytics within an enterprise environment.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for a curious and commercially aware Data Scientist who combines strong technical expertise with excellent stakeholder engagement skills.

You Will Bring:
  • Demonstrable experience delivering end-to-end data science solutions in a business environment.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical modelling, machine learning and predictive analytics techniques.
  • Advanced Python and SQL skills, with experience building scalable analytical solutions for production environments.
  • Experience designing, training, validating and deploying machine learning models.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to translate complex business challenges into structured analytical approaches.
  • Experience working with large enterprise datasets and integrating multiple data sources to generate actionable insight.
  • Strong data visualisation and storytelling skills, ideally using Power BI or similar tools.
  • Experience working within cloud-based analytics platforms, ideally Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Databricks, Synapse or similar technologies.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and confidently to stakeholders at all levels.
  • A collaborative mindset with the confidence to challenge assumptions and propose innovative solutions.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

“It was my brother’s suggestion to join the railway. He was already working in the industry and knew I had some university bills to pay off so told me to give it a go, get out of debt and see what I wanted to do next. After a while, it just felt like actually – this is exactly where I’m meant to be. I’m part of a great team and the on-board department as a whole are brilliant to work with. I feel at home here.”

“When I saw that GTR was advertising places for its apprenticeship scheme I looked into it straight away because I thought it was a great opportunity to learn whilst getting real life experience in a 9-5 job. I applied for a level three business administration apprenticeship and was thrilled to find out I had a place on the course! I was so excited that I didn’t even mind it was based 250 miles away from where I lived.”

“Working for GTR is very rewarding and fulfilling. You really feel like you're making a difference to customers, no matter what role you're in as at the end of the day they're the heart of our business. I’ve had lots of opportunities to explore other aspects of the business including supporting our station staff and gaining my Train Dispatch Licence which has been enriching for my experience here.”

“If you’ve always had an interest in rail, or maybe you’re just curious to find out what working in the
