H&R Block is hiring a Data Scientist for Small Business Analytics to drive data‑driven insights across the SMB organization. You’ll partner with the DS&A team to translate questions into analytics, develop models, perform exploratory analysis, and deliver actionable findings that inform growth, client engagement, and operational efficiency.

  • 2–4 years in data science, analytics, or related role.

  • Translate business questions into analytical approaches and deliverables.
  • Support end‑to‑end analytics projects including data extraction, cleaning and modeling.
  • Build and analyze predictive/descriptive models for segmentation, behavior, campaigns, and ops.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends and opportunities in SMB data.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing and operations to align analytics with goals.
  • Communicate results through presentations, dashboards, or summaries.
  • Contribute to production analytics with engineering teams and ensure reproducibility.

About The Role

Data Scientist – Small Business Analytics

H&R Block is seeking a Data Scientist to support analytics initiatives for the Small Business (SMB) organization. This role will work closely with the Data Science & Analytics (DS&A) team and SMB partners to develop data‑driven insights that inform growth strategies, improve client engagement, and enhance operational efficiency. The Data Scientist will contribute across the data science lifecycle from data exploration and feature development to modeling, analysis, and insight delivery while gaining exposure to real‑world business problems in a collaborative environment.

Day to day, you’ll…

  • Partner with DS&A teammates and SMB stakeholders to understand business questions and translate them into analytical approaches and deliverables.
  • Support end‑to‑end analytics and data science projects, including data extraction, cleaning, feature engineering, model development, and validation.
  • Build and analyze predictive and descriptive models to support initiatives such as client segmentation, customer behavior analysis, campaign performance measurement, and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities within small business data.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, and operational teams to design analytical solutions that align with business goals.
  • Translate analytical results into clear, actionable insights and communicate findings through presentations, dashboards, or written summaries.
  • Contribute to productionized analytics solutions by partnering with engineering or platform teams as needed.
  • Apply best practices in data quality, documentation, and reproducibility.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field.
Work Experience
  • 2–4 years of experience in data science, analytics, or a related analytical role.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis and machine learning techniques to real‑world business problems.
  • Strong foundation in data wrangling, exploratory analysis, and model development.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, along with SQL for data extraction and analysis.
  • Familiarity with common modeling approaches such as regression, classification, clustering, and experimentation.
  • Ability to communicate analytical concepts and results clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within cross‑functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with small business, financial, or customer‑level data.
  • Exposure to experimentation frameworks, A/B testing, or causal analysis.
  • Basic understanding of accounting, finance, or tax concepts.
  • Experience working in a cloud‑based data environment.

Pay Range Information

The pay range for this position is listed below. Local minimum wage laws apply. Individual pay decisions will depend on job‑related factors such as experience, education, skill, performance, and geographic location where work will be performed. Successful candidates may be able to participate in one or more incentive compensation or short‑term incentive plans, which could generate additional earnings in accordance with the terms of each plan.
