Work Schedule: University Business hours are Monday - Friday 8AM - 5PM. The Libraries supports flexible work arrangements based on departmental and operational needs. This position will require frequent onsite work. Exempt position.

About The Department

NC State University Libraries promotes innovative services and spaces for students, faculty, and researchers. The James B. Hunt Jr. Library and D. H. Hill Jr. Library host advanced technologies, collaborative spaces, and data‑science facilities such as the Dataspace and the Data Experience Lab. The Data Science Services (DSS) team offers consultation, workshops, and instruction across the data lifecycle.

Essential Job Duties

The Data Science Librarian provides expert consultative support, workshop‑based training, and course‑integrated instruction for students, faculty, and researchers in data science and visualization. Responsibilities include leading support around tabular data, spreadsheet tools, and visualizations; designing and delivering workshops; collaborating with faculty and campus partners; contributing to departmental initiatives; and mentoring graduate student consultants. The role aligns with the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, participates in planning, and serves on library‑wide committees.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• ALA‑accredited MLS, MIS, or other relevant advanced degree

Other Required Qualifications

• Proficiency with tabular data concepts and tools such as SPSS, SAS, JMP, Google Sheets, and/or STATA.
• Proficiency with data visualization concepts and tool design.
• Ability to teach workshops, instruction, or other training on data preparation and visualization, including Google Sheets sessions.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technical skills and tools; evidence of ongoing self‑directed learning.
• Interest in supporting students, faculty, and staff in developing data skills.
• Ability to serve and collaborate with a large user community.
• Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well‑being.
• Clear, knowledgeable communication across mediums; ability to represent the Libraries to university and external audiences.
• Collaborative, team‑oriented work style.
• Ongoing professional development and contribution to the library profession.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of advanced data visualization, survey design, qualitative analysis, statistics, or related approaches.
• Proficiency with programming languages for data transformation, analysis, and visualization such as R, Python, etc.
• Experience delivering instruction, workshops, or training for data topics.
