Job summary

ASARCO LLC offers a Data Science Intern role within the Advanced Analytics Group. You will tackle projects across process optimization, operational intelligence, and strategic data analysis to solve real-world mining industry challenges.

Qualifications

Job description

The Data Science Intern will support the Advanced Analytics Group on a variety of projects, including process optimization, operational intelligence, and strategic data analysis. The intern will gain hands-on experience applying AI/ML as well as operations research techniques to solve real-world business challenges in the mining industry across different functions of the company.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist in framing the problem to be solved as a business problem and then as an analytical problem that can be solved with advanced analytics techniques (AI/ML, mathematical optimization, or simulation).

Assist in the extraction and cleaning of the data as well as in the data understanding process with the subject matter experts.

Assist in building AI/ML, mathematical optimization, or simulation models.

Assist in building data pipelines and deployment of models on Microsoft Azure.

Build and design Power BI dashboards to serve model outputs or strategic insights to end users.

Prepare PowerPoint presentations explaining the approach taken for the assigned project and presenting the insights to upper management.

Support the Advanced Analytics Group in delivery of analyses and presentations that upper management might request.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Strong understanding of machine learning, statistics, mathematical optimization, or simulation (not all need a strong understanding, familiarity with concepts is also welcomed).

Programming skills in Python or R and familiarity with common data science libraries (e.g.: Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Tidyverse, Tidymodels).

Familiarity with data visualization tools, preferably Power BI.

Collaborative attitude and ability to communicate complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders.

Excellent problem-solving skills and comfort working in ambiguous and unstructured problems.

Microsoft Azure knowledge and Spanish knowledge is welcomed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in data science, engineering, operations research, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
